I have had a lot of parrot mouthed horses and haven't had to use any kind of special bit on them. Most of them I used either a regular ring snaffle or medium shank Ed Wright bit with either a 2 or 3 piece mouth piece.

My horse has a pretty severe parrot mouth. She has a performance float by a DVM equine dentist every 6 months. I haven't ever had to use anything different on her than I have any other horse, but I think the frequent floats have a lot to do with that. He keeps her planes very level and keeps the bit seats correct.

Thanks for all the responses. His isn't severe & he gets dental work every 6 months. I was just curious about others' experiences. I will certainly try a hackamore to see if he likes that any better.

You can use any bit! We have a horse with a parrot mouth but one thing you really have to do is keep his dentistry up every 6 months or you'll regret it!
