When would you use one or the other or both? What kind of injuries? Fractures, suspensory, abscess, sprains? Etc
I have a fracture on my hands and it's been totally fine until yesterday when the swelling started. He is on stall rest and I can't find any research or threads about ice or heat for fractures?

Best rule of thumb for any injury is cold for the first 48 hours. After that you usually switch to heat. You do need to be careful with tendon and ligament injuries though. Using heat too soon can cause a lot of problems. When in doubt, go with cold.
As for fractures, I have no idea other than keeping the horse from moving. What exactly is fractured?

Hairline fracture to pastern bone. It's a 4-8 week lay up but vet has me on stall rest till Monday so we can get better x rays.. he's been on stall rest for almost a week and the swelling started yesterday morning. I had a session of leader therapy this morning which took all the swelling out 'for now' but it is SOOO hot, I know the swelling will be back just wasn't sure should I sweat it out or ice it
