My 3 year old gelding will get hives, only in the evening time, and localized to his RIGHT WITHER ONLY with a couple here and there on his back and just a few spread out over top of his butt. This happens maybe every 2 weeks but always in the evening. He rubs his butt only, and does not attempt to rub his shoulder/withers area where the hives actually are. He doe NOT rub his tail head.. His tail hair is never roughed up just his back a little and top of his butt. So I don't think pin worms. Vets always told me if it was food or air they usually have a systemic reaction, not just local areas. His feed has not changed, weather has not changed etc. At first I thought it was ants maybe he rolled in or was sleeping on that side and he got into some ants or something but I don't think so. Good thing is, they have never been bad enough he needed medical/dex etc. I just spray a mist of lame away spray on the area and give a double dose of FORCO and they are usually gone in 10 minutes.
One idea I am going to try, he might be allergic to WOOL! I always ride with a BOT underpad but sometimes if I am in a hurry for a quick ride I just throw his 5 star wool pad on his bare back and go. He hasn't had the issue in couple weeks and I got a brand new 5 star for my birthday and I just put it on his back to see what it would look like ( I got a cool one with Brown Croc color.. ). Sure enough this morning he had his hives again... Same spot... Anyone else have one allergic to wool?
Find something to help clean out his liver. When the liver detoxes itself it is done through the skin. I have had some localized breakouts and gave a liver cleanse for 30 or so days and they were good to go.
