Location: Alabama | Okay guys, so I believe this is gonna be the year I go for it, that I try for the quilifyer! I know this is gonna be a long shot but my horse is feeling the best he ever has, is working the best he ever has and I'm ready.
So with that being said, what's the best way to get my nerves worked out?!
I obviously will be riding ever day like a previously have been, he's on a great supplement, seeing a great vet, seeing the chiro etc...
So my question is, is there anything extra you would suggest?
Also should I make as many runs(within reason) on him as I can till I'm flawless? Or should I let him hang out in shape and work him and hit jackpots as normal? |

Get your nerves figured out by just making another run.
Don't think about it being the biggest run of your life ... or your nerves will be shot. Think of it as just any other barrel race.
As far as if you should do anything extra for your horse; well, that depends on your horse. Some run harder the less you run them -- some run harder the more you run them. So depends on what works for your horse. |

Location: Sunnyland Florida | Change your mindset. No run is a big run. They are all just another run; horse show, jackpot, NBHA or down Thomas & Mack alley, it's all just another run. Make the best run you can for where you are at in your training/progress. Be confident and take the absolute best care of your horse, relax, smile and have fun. Tell the negative committee that meets in your head to sit down and shut up. Then, tell yourself "I'm a great barrel racer, he's a great barrel horse" many times, then make "your" run.

| Do what you would do for any other run, I'm assuming any time you turn down the alley the goal is to lay down a smokin' run and hope it's enough right?
Go do it. You have zero control over how the rest of the field runs. Make your run just like you would at any other race.
Follow your program, if the program has been working don't deviate.
About the only thing I'd consider is if you have to travel farther than you typically do, arriving a day early to have him rested, but that also depends on how well your horse travels/stalls/rests away from home.
You know best. |

Completely agree! When you make "that" run a big deal and different than any other run you've made you will overthink, over ride, and not have as much fun. Obviously the runs you have been making are good enough to give you the confidence to enter, so don't change your program!!! Keep doing you! GOOD LUCK! |

| As others have said, work on your mental game. If you google Barbara Schulte, she is great with this. I have her Riding with Confidence CD's, although I haven't listened to them in a long time. If I remember correctly they are geared toward cutting, but the same concepts can be used to barrel racing. I highly recommend these to anyone! |
