I was checking the status of my APHA paperwork where I had to change the registration papers from stallions to geldings today and noticed that one of my colts is still in my name. i sold this colt awhile back, more than three years ago, with transfer paperwork filled out to new owner, and they have never tranferred ownership into their name. Why? They specifically wanted this black n white tobi, and registration. So why not get him in their name? Since he was a home bred, home raised, and I owned the sire and dam, he was a dandy. Perfect color, perfect blaze, perfect confirmation and a nice horse to boot. They paid a good price for him, why not get registration completed? Made me wonder How many do not?

More people do not transfer horses than you can imagine. They will go to sell the horse and wonder why there is a problem when they lost the papers or transfer.

I bought a registered APHA about 4 years ago now. Papers really didnt mean much to me especially bc he's a gelding, but it is nice knowing where he came from/how he's bred. I have all paperwork and signed transfer from seller and just haven't gotten around to sending them in. It's also not a pressing issue for me so its no biggie. I eventually will since he'll begin his barrel racing career this year!!

I was researching a horse I was trying and was told there were 4 more owners than on his papers which was already several for a 12 year old.  I was able to find them in race records.

I don't get it either. It's like $20 for AQHA to transfer ownership. I have at least one still in my name that I sold almost 10 years ago.

I bought a gelding this year on a Saturday...and I had his paperwork sent in the mail first thing that Monday morning. I was so thrilled to get him and excited to see my name on his papers! But...some just don't feel that way I guess.

I do compete (NATRC CTR) and I wanted to have his registration on file with the organization for breed awards etc. So there are other motivations for me than just pride of ownership. Maybe for some that don't have breed awards or membership on the line...they just don't bother.

I hardly ever get mine transferred, but I do if I sell one, which is almost never. I don't breed my mares but I would get them transferred if I did breed. I don't know why I don't, I guess I don't really care because I don't sell them or breed them.

Probably cause you have to be a MEMBER of that association in order transfer a horse into your name. For me, I don't show or breed so I could care less. I have all the Bill of Sales and Transfer reports. Just rarely send them in,

I only buy registered horses because it is imperative for resale value. But I pretty much never have them transferred into my name, because buyers don't care. As long as you have a signed transfer from the last person on the papers, people are fine with that.

I prefer to have them in my name. So as soon as we buy one I send in the transfer papers. And when we have one born here the papers are send in within the first 6 months. (it takes me a bit to come up with a good name...

What irks me is when people breed registerable stock then don't register them! Whats the point of even breeding? I bought a FOUR YEAR OLD last year that came to me with APHA breeders certificate and transfer, never got him registered. Literally took 2 weeks and $150 to get his papers.

I think it's really important to get those papers transferred and/or get babies registered.

Mine are sent in and back within 10 days.

It is called taking care of business.

How many times have there been threads on BHW griping about how difficult AQHA is to work with?

Edited to add. If I am looking at a horse for sale and the papers are not in order, I go to the next one.

I have three horses in my name that have been sold. Two of them were sold 10 years ago. I tried to track down their new owners but couldn't because they are still in my name.

I will also note, that several years ago, 15-16 in fact, I bought a registered mare in foal. She was bred well and the sire of the foal was also. The seller signed over the mares paperwork and said when the foal hit the ground she would give me a breeders certificate. Fine. AT that time I was uneducated as to the in & out of paperwork. Well the foal hit the ground,a beautiful sorrel/white tobi, beautiful...I called the seller and she refused to give me the breeders certificate.....we went round n round. She wanted an additional $200 for the certificate. I got the APHA involved and they refused to back me, which ****ed me off to no end. So I gelded him and registered him with Pinto association. I was told it was a civil issue and I would have to take her to court. At that time I chalked it up to part of my edication in the world of paperwork. Never again will I be taken like this. The seller was later on list of bad sellers, and I hear they are just bad horse dealers. So I do consider the mare a rescue case even after all this time. That was my learning case.

Sold a mare in 2009 and the papers were ready to be transferred but ownership has not changed according to APHA... It irritates me to no end! Wanted to track the mare down but I still "have" her. Grrr

She was well bred and a fantastic broodmare, too!

We are currently in a legal mess over non transfer of papers. One of the owners died and the horses were sold however a lot of papers have not been transferred. So on paper it looks like the spouse still owns a lot of the horses and the beneficiaries have allegedly in lawsuit that horses are being "hid"
It's a mess.
Personally, all mine are transferred. It's a cheap price to pay for peace of mind. FYI, I bought my first TB and all you have to do is sign the back of the papers. There is no requirement to send into jockey club for transfer to be complete but she has an AQHA # for breeding purpose so I did send in the change.

I enter my horses in registered shows. I ride them in amateur classes they have to be in my name. The paint on my avatar is a world champion. I have others that are champions at big shows. I enjoy tough competition and seeing how well my horses will perform. It kind of forces you to have the horses in your name.

I went to an APHA show in Alvarado Tx. I have never seen so many team ropes in my life. I am sure their paperwork was in order. Did not know so many ropers rode paints!

i dont anymore ---after aqha making a mistake & putting someone elses name on my mares papers & sending them to someone else.  then it took me a year to get her papers after they corrected them???
that may have been a fluke. but it was enough to scare me of doing it again.

Also it makes the horse look like it has changed hands a lot. Which may hurt resale as well.

Here is your problem....you failed to transfer according to AQHA rules .....

REG124.4 Seller’s Responsibility: The owner of record at time of sale has the responsibility for completing an AQHA transfer report in its entirety and for delivery of it to AQHA.
REG124.4.1 The seller must provide on the transfer report the correct name and registration number of the horse, date of sale, name and address of buyer, and signature and address of seller. The seller shall deliver the transfer form, along with the registration certificate, to AQHA, along with any other documents required to complete the transfer of ownership. Payment of the required fee shall be a matter of private negotiation between the buyer and seller and may be paid by either of them, but such fee must accompany the transfer, with the membership status of the buyer determining the applicable transfer fee.
REG124.4.2 Auction Sale: For a horse sold through an auction, the seller may rely on the auction management to send the registration certificate, properly completed transfer report and required transfer fee to AQHA on the seller’s behalf. Ultimate responsibility for completion and delivery of the transfer report along with any other documents required to complete the transfer of ownership to the current owner, to AQHA, continues however to remain with the seller.

THIS. Most of these grade horses have papers somewhere or were registerable but the breeders never "got around to it"

I filled out the required paperwork, signed and resigned everywhere I was to sign, dated everything too. i checked the APHA site, and it is the seller's responsibility to fill out everything, BUT the BUYERS responsibility to submit the completed transfer form from the seller along with the original registration certificate & fees.
