Our local rodeo associations here in Ohio dont check for coggins or require one, but it is illegal to haul across state lines without one so it would be wise to get one if you plan on traveling..
Here in Michigan the associations do not require a coggins, however the grounds holding the event may. We are required to have coggins tests on our horses as contestants and as stock conractors on the bucking horses and have them ready to be provided if asked. There are a few rodeos where the state vet waits at the gate and they will turn you around if you don't have them. There are a few rodeos they have showed up after you are already there and will walk around and ask to see them. There are some places it's just a facility thing whether be a fairgrounds or what, they have someone asking to see them. But there are even more places that never ask.

Arkansas requires a coggins test annually on any equine...whether or not it ever leaves its pasture. Not just on those that travel. My 29 year old retired pasture puff gets his taken every year. In this state if you live within a certain distance of other horses (maybe 400 yards...something specific like that) you can request that the compliance folks from the livestock commission come out and verify that those horses have been tested. They do take it seriously.

Crossing state lines requires a negative coggins. I no longer rodeo but the cow horse competitions here in Colorado 99% of the time require a negative coggins, PLUS a health certificate shown to the show secretary if you're hauling from out of state.
Couple months ago in Weld County a horse came up IEA positive, so everyone in the northern part is being extra careful now, especially around the Greeley area. So I'd guess every horse that went to the Greeley Stampede and the Rooftop Rodeo in Estes had to have a negative coggins.

This wonderful spell check on my phone is so handy. It fixes everything for me. Didn't proof read. I notice that most people do not
