| My horse always gets his tongue over his bit. Is there a way to stop this?
I usually ride him in a million dollar dog bone twisted wire bit, but have recently switched to a twisted wire pozzi lifter bit (no dogbone).
He gets his tongue over both. They're high enough in his mouth without being too tight, and definitely not too low.
He IS controllable, but this must be uncomfortable (and/or dangerous). |

use a chain small or piecs of cotton sheet strip thru the o in the middle of bit tie it snug but not too tight under chin or put a surewin on your bridle

| Tongue tie. I use one on my mare.
I use a longer piece of gauze, Loop over her tongue, and tie it under her chin. Not very tight, just enough that she can't get her tongue out from under the bit or out of the loop. Works beautifully.
Racehorse folks use them a lot. |

On this combo bit/hack ... put 2-3 smile marks in corner of mouth
and tighten up the curb chain in the rear to one finger tightness
to make the hack work ..
if chain is dangling you are getting nothing from the hack and
at the same time the grazing bit type of shanks will lower the
bit in the horses mouth ...
You have to correct the fit to both things or horse will slurp his
tongue over the bit. And use light hands!!

The pozzi bit is really a curb bit with long shanks 6 1/2 and 8 1/4..
this can be a harsh bit with heavy hands and 1/4 inch twisted bit ..
Fit as the one above so the curb chain is active and horse has
2 smiles ... it also has a 5 1/2 inch mouth which is generally oversized
for a qh ... 5 inch is standard and can be oversized if horse has
a small head ... being to wide at the bars on mouth piece is another
way for a slurpy horse to get their tongue over the bit..

You need to post a picture of how the headstall and bit is fitting on your horse.  |

Defense Attorney for The Horse
Location: Claremore, OK | Let him live in a bit. Put a light, single ply leather headstall on an Oring snaffle, smooth mouthpiece, and let him live in it it 24/7. He will learn to pack it, eat and drink in it in a few days. After he learns to pack the snaffle he should pack any bit without getting his tongue over it.
Check on him frequently. Remove the bit when he's comfortable wearing it, not fussing.
****you want to make sure that the headstall is light leather, so if it gets caught on something it will break. Nylon or double ply leather usually won't break and could cut his mouth.
