| Pretty roan, 4 yo, priced around $1500
Owner knows bloodlines but it can't be registered. Is broke nicely.
Do you think a person could make it into a good working horse and sell it for much more than the purchase price? The lack of papers makes me nervous but it is a gelding which in my mind is better than a mare for paperwork wise.
Thoughts?
(Husband wants a "business plan")LOL!

If he's built REALLY pretty and balanced and strong- good using geldings go pretty good around here even if grade. But they have to be pretty...and you couldn't get more than 5k I don't think. That's if they are well started roping and barrels and stuff |

Location: Montana | Speaking from friends' experiences, I'd probably 5 panel test the horse before I bought him. Sometimes grade horses are just avoiding the recognition of troubled names on the papers . . . .
Good grade ranch geldings will still sell well around here. |

| Being roan will help. 5 panel for sure - at the end of the day they can say he's bred any way they want as long as the cross will produce a roan. If one side of the papers was really nice and you had the ability I'd even be tempted to DNA test, but only if it's a notable name that'll help sell him.
What kind of experience can you get the horse? Are you looking to keep him and see what he turns out to be or turn him quick? I know of a few folks who could probably turn a profit on him but they have a working cattle ranch, rope, etc - he'll come home and gain real working horse experience in the first week.
He'll be a gamble but if he's well broke and we'll built and pretty - you probably won't lose on him. |

| It is your money but I would not spend $1500 on a 4 year old unregistered horse. Around here you can pick them up for a couple of hundred tops |

| O.k That's the things I was wondering. I figured the most I could get back would be in that $3,500 to $5,000 range. I've also looked at some ponies to resale as well. I have two daughters who do 4-H and Rodeo plus myself who works cattle and such with them. Kind of looking for a project to fine tune and then resell. Maybe the ponies would be a better thing to look at. |

| SO what some of you are saying is, if she bought the horse for 1500, and he turned into an NFR caliber barre/rope/etc horse she would only get 5k tops???? I would have to disagree. I really could care less about papers, its about ability and what they can do. I know some people that paid 25k for a GRADE MARE ( Of all things) because their little girl could go and clean house on her at the Jr rodeos. |

I agree with Flit. If he is well made and athletic with a good mind, he might make something really special but even if he makes a good, dependable 3D/4D horse he should have a decent resale value. |

I was saying 5k as well started, not as finished and proven. Definitely agree with you there. |

I'm surprised it took almost 20 hours for that tired cliche to show up.

I agree and the thing about papers is AGE when they are older. Get aweful tired of hearing people buy a 10 yr old grade gelding just to find out he is really 18 when the vet checks his teeth. AND as already mentioned, the 5 panel thing. Without papers and an actual name, how are people down the line going to prove that the 5 panel test you got on him, really matches him without him being DNA'd to match the DNA on the 5 panel results.
Papers make a huge difference with resale value down the line and it doesn't always have to do with how the horse is bred. $1500 is too much unless he is just a knockout to look at and already has a perfect disposition. He'll have resale value when you get him riding and fancy broke, but he's already 4. How long and what kind of $$$ are you going to have into him before you sell for $4500/$5500 or whatever you are expecting? 2 yrs of just feed and maintenance doesn't leave much room for profit. Teeth around here is $150ish. farriers etc etc. Projects are more for fun and to have something to ride in the hopes of breaking even. Actual training jobs, buying prospects with the intention to resale are where the $$$ is. |

| No papers are a deal breaker for me. I tried a horse with "no papers" found he had a tattoo - research him, he wasn't 18 as advertised, but 25! So to me, papers matter for that reason. |

| If I buy an unpapered horse, I still get a prepurchase exam and ask the vet to age him by his teeth. |

| If you want to resell him, dont do it. If you want a project horse for yourself then it shouldnt matter. From a business side of it, selling a grade horse is challenging.
Ive been more successful on grade horses in the barrel pen then registered ones but I kept those horses for a really long time. I couldnt put a value on them. My best friend took a 4 year old grade palomino gelding, put alot of money in him. She is kicking ass and taking names around here. Someone offered $15k. She turned it down. She picked him up as a project and keep him. She didnt care if he ran barrels or became a great ranch horse. |

Agree with this! I would say go for it, if you can get him a little cheaper than what they are asking. I've personally bought around 10 grade horses now for a few hundred, trained and flipped for 2-5k. But I wouldn't spend more than 500 bucks on one. Roan and color sells though! Just make sure there's NO vices with him, that'll make the sale hard. Good luck =] |

Location: MS | I prefer my horses registered, but with him being a gelding it wouldn't be a complete deal breaker. Only problem with grade horses are people not being honest about the horses age. |
