| My 5 year old was just diagnosed with a mild case of EPM. Does anyone have any experience with it? If so, how did you treat your horse and how did they respond and go back to working? |

| I've never had one but have several friends that have had. From all the friends that have had a horse with it the ones that treated with the more generic or vet made meds, their horses didn't ever get back to being able to do anything except for a pasture ornament. Other friends that treated with the more expensive Marque (sp?) were back to using their horses as before. |

| I have used several products with great success. My problem is that the horse gets reinfected. (Asked vet). Baycox, Rebalance are two that I have had success with. Oroquin or what ever that stuff is called is good also. All are about the same price. Around here $300. My horse is fine now

Location: Glendive Mt. | http://www.epmhorse.org/Treatment/Treatment.htm. I used the Origen 10. Worked great much cheaper then the marquis with lots of less side effects.you get it from the company pathogens in Florida. |

Location: Oklahoma | Stay on top of it!!!! There is no cure! it effects the nerves. Mine was really bad and I have to treat 2-3x a year. But be careful bc I sometimes get tunnel vision thinking that epm causing a certain thing and it is something else. But as time goes you will be able to figure out if your problem epm or something else. |

| Just be aware that this is one of the most over diagnosed conditions. If you "test" for it using blood the only thing that can be confirmed is exposure. And guess what..an estimated 80% of horses have been exposed. Exposure doesnt mean they have contracted it. Its almost easier just to treat to rule it out. Of couse unless you have a horse with severe symptoms, then it is easier to know what you are dealing with. |

This. We have treated 2 with Origin. They both don't seem to have any ill effects of the EPM, but we caught it super early. |

Location: TX | My barrel horse was diagnosed with an acute case 2 years ago. Diagnosis was confirmed via spinal tap. We hit the treatment hard; two weeks in ICU, the most expensive medicines available, etc. Total bill was in excess of $10,000 and I did not have major medical insurance on him yet as I had only owned him a few months so it was pretty devastating.
He had partial paralysis at the time which affected his eye on one side, and caused a secondary eye infection that took two months to treat. He had to be on stall rest with a line-drip into his eye that whole time, receiving 6 different eye meds every 6 hours. There were two different medicines I had to give him for the EPM. I know one was Marquis, can't remember the other but I do remember that we treated for 60 days with a med that cost $900 per month.
Nerves can take up to 2yrs to heal. I recently brought him back into light work and I'd say he's made about 85% recovery. He'll probably never run at the level he did before (solid 3d), but based on his current progress I think it's realistic that he'll be a 4d/5d horse, or good for playdays. I basically plan to have him legged up as a back up horse to my new main horse.
As someone mentioned above, the hardest thing is determining whether something is caused by the EPM or by something else. I occasionally want to blame the EPM and then remember that he had that issue before he ever got sick.
My horse was a fairly severe case (shaking, spinning, falling over, unable to walk, etc) and he has made a really decent recovery all things considered. The only issue I have with him is that he sometimes will crossfire in the back if he's out of position the least little bit. As long as I keep his shoulder up, he's fine. He still has a slight droop to one side of his mouth.
I have not made a full speed run on him yet but he's loping a decent pattern again, so I feel pretty confident. However if he doesn't run again, he's still completely suitable for trail riding, team penning, etc.
Main thing to remember is that it is a SLOW recovery. Like I said, expect 2yrs before you know how much recovery you're going to get. Also a good Vitamin E supplement is critical.
