What is your favorite mouthpiece for a horse that gets strong in the alley? He'll move all his parts correctly away from the pattern but when it's go time he gets strong.

What bit do you currently have this horse in?
I usually ride in an Ed Wright 2 piece and a Kathy James 2 piece twisted. He's really bendy and I need to stiffen him up. Been wanting to get a mullen to see if that does the trick for that end of things.

I would step up to a 3 piece and see what that gets you - he may be more respectful of tongue pressure. If not enough then a pretzel. I'm not a huge noseband fan but could help.
Bits are a largely personal choice just cause everyone's hands and what they want to feel are different, not to mention every horse

I would step up to a three piece or Pretzel. He will still be flexible but you can really grab a hold of him with the pretzel. I personally don't like the Mullen in my own horse as I feel it makes him too stiff. However, many people are changing over to the mullen and seem to like them quite a bit. I would find a used Pretzel to try first tho.

Reinsman Charmayne James Ported Waterford Bit the shorter shank version. I was totally surprised and love it. Horses love it too. Happy faces. stopped bit gnawing. lots of lip licking and soft eyes. Checks without hissy fit, never lifts head, just sets butt. Added note: I am not a bit junky go to a stronger bit person. Usually I go softer to figure out drama. I read a great Les Vogt artical on ported bits and tried this one. I was shocked. Gonna buy anther one today.

Thanks for the replies! I'm not a "find a big bit" type of gal myself. I think I own 8 bits and I use about 4. I've spent the last 2 months working on getting him breaking at the poll, softening his body, moving his parts independently when asked, etc. Basically just holding him more accountable for traveling correctly. He's made huge changes (at age 17 I'm proud of him).....but.....when you get to a rodeo or show and it's go time he gets really strong.
