| Hey y'all Im coming into my senior year of high school and I do want to go onto a higher education but I'm not to sure what I want to study, I currently have a job training horses and I love it as well as rodeo, but I want to see what y'all studied and what you'd recommend? Any input helps, Im just trying to get some ideas coming in!

| My daughter got her degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry and then went on the Parker Chiropractic School in Dallas. She LOVES being a chiropractor. At Parker, they also have a massage school, I believe and many different kinds of chiropractic therapies. I highly encourage you to look into that and if you are interested, I can ask my daughter to answer any questions you may have. You don't have to get a 4 year degree to go to Parker, I believe it is 90 hours of college hours, though. She wanted the degree first. |

| I can't make a link on my phone but check the thread that I posted a few days ago. It is not in the horse industry but it would certainly support your horse habit. Sadly, not many jobs in the horse industry are very lucrative. |

| Horse industry probably isn't going to pay you a ton. You could make a living starting colts and training but if (when) you get hurt, you're kind of in a tough spot. I think nursing is a very smart career. A lot of different areas and good money, as well as most nurses only work 3x a week...lots of time to play with horses. |

Location: Phoenix | Don't go to school to study horses. Go to school to PAY for horses. ;) Definitely go to school and get two years under your belt. During those two years really think about what you're good at and what you're not good at. Visit your guidance counselor often. I recommend looking online for jobs that interest you and then see what kind of schooling that job requires. I know people with accounting degrees and computer science degrees are always employable. I would also recommend that you try and shadow as many people in these potential jobs that interest you. |

Location: Nebraska | I went for nursing, like others have said I work 3 12's. If you aren't sure, go to a community college and work on your gen ed's until you do decide, unless you have big scholarships elsewhere. That'll be so much cheaper and easier in the long run. |

All of this advice was very good, but the highlighted part especially!!
The first 2 years it really doesn't matter what you declare your major as. Everyone starts off the same. Use those 2 years to learn more about yourself and what your'e interested in and maybe more importantly what you're NOT interested in. For example, I knew right away that any kind of teaching job and anything in the medical field was not for me. That narrowed it down a bit. I know someone who declared as a Poultry Science major because it was uncommon and it got them a good scholarship. Lol! They changed it later. Not saying this is exactly scrupulous, but just wanted to get my point across that you do not have to have your decision set in stone when you apply.
Accountants, nurses, engineers, computer scientists, dental hygientists- all great careers to look further into and see if they interest you. Great job demand, good pay, good hours.

| If I were to go back and do it again I would look at something in the medical field. I don't think I would enjoy being an RN but something like an X-ray tech, ultrasonographer, dental hygienist, etc. If you want to go for accounting I recommend 4 year degree, I did 2 year and even with several years experience I make a small fraction of what I would with a 4 yr and certifications. I would research the area you want to live in and what a career field pays and hours/shifts looks like to give you a better idea |

| If you go the business route then I would do accounting - it is not just numbers - contrary to popular belief you have deal with people, a lot. But it can be a lucrative career and pay your bills and your horse habit. |

Location: The best kept secret in TX | Go for your Associates first from a local community college. Way cheaper. Get the basics out of the way. Then look into actually getting a degree. Most 2 or 4 year degrees call for an associates degree anyway plus or minus a class or two.
Also, look into getting certifications during the summers or mini mesters. Summer Classes are shorter and easier. These can include CPR, CNA, Office Management, Quick Books, Excel and Windows, Basic computer data entry, basic computer skills, basic horse handling/care, basic horse training, and many more that may help you get a better job while you're attending college. Sure, it's great that you know how to do a lot of things but without experience you may consider getting a certificate to prove to an employer you can do a certain job until you have job experience.
The certifications can take up to 12 weeks for longer courses but they are great to get you an entry level position without forcing you to work for minimum wage while trying to pay for college and hobbies such as rodeo. Certified Nurse Assistants also have the option to work nights. leaving your days wide open for school and hobbies. (I ran on 4 hours sleep each day when I worked nights stocking at the local grocery store.) It can be done.

| Do not get a degree in Equine Science. I have a lot of friends that did...know people that are...it's a waste. That's all I have to say about that.
I do recommend going to a junior college. I was lucky enough to have one 20 min from home. It was great. I figured a lot out while I was there before transferring on.
I also had a lot of friends who got a degree in Animal Science; they had a hard time finding jobs in the Midwest.
Personally, if you're going with Ag, I'd recommend Agribusiness Economics or a straight business degree. Maybe even something in technology.
Like I said, I think a lot of people overlook junior colleges. I loved it.

| Thank y'all so so much for the feedback, it means a lot! I go to a pretty small school that allows me to take college courses as well as my high school courses so by the time I graduate I will have most of my basics done.
Y'all have no idea how much this helps!

Location: Kansas | Nursing!!! Nurses are high in demand, and the pay is excellent if you get on with a good facility. Most work 3-4 12hr shifts, here in kansas they start at a minimum of $25 per hour. |

| I don't suggest animal science/equine science.....
Go to school for something you can AFFORD (minimize student loan debt.... student loan payments get in the way of a lot of things after graduation).
Look at the average pay in a chosen career path, is it enough?
Also, if you're wanting to live in a certain area, make sure you're career path is found there. |

| I personally regret not going into the military when I finished high school. I feel like it would've been better for me to go into the military, get some training and life experience, and then go to school after like my sister did. I don't feel like I made very good decisions when I was young and I rushed into school and completed my degree, etc. and then I wasn't happy with the major I chose. I worked in my chosen field for awhile and then went back to school for something totally different. |

| I agree with all of the above. My piece of advice would be to get a degree and go into a field where you have to be certified, otherwise anyone can get a job same as you without the expensive college classes. I personally got a Mass Communications degree, with a double minor in journalism and public relations. It's useless, and the newspapers, radio stations and tv stations around where I live will hire someone without any degree or experience and pay them the same amount.
Whatever you choose, be sure to intern or shadow someone in the day to day job. Academia and real life are totally different. |

I second this. I have my Bachelors in Accounting and had a job offer a week after graduation. I went on to get my MBA as well and it has opened many doors for me. I have worked in both private and public accounting, but definitely prefer the flexibility I have with a smaller, private company. I will never regret getting an accounting degree. I've always been able to afford my horse habit and could move just about anywhere and get a job. As others have said, nursing or just about anything in the medical field is a solid career path as well. |
