| I see lots of people with multiple fat human-style braids in their horse's manes, but how come I don't I see more running braids? Is there a particular reason they Are Not Done? |

| I always do them on my mom's horses when she asks me to do their hair. I always braid it tight to the top of the neck. I don't do it all the time because I'm lazy and just do three or four big chunky braids instead of trying to perfect the running braid, dang OCD. Only thing I don't like about the running braid is that parts of it pull loose when the horse puts their head down. Now during our fair since it's usually hot and the show goes on all day, I'll more than likely do a running braid for him. |

Location: "...way down south in the Everglades..." | I think a lot of people don't know how to do them. I do both depending on how much time. I spend longer on the running braids so if I need something quick I just do the fat braids. Or if I need something real quick I do pony tails. If it's not hot I typically don't do anything. |

| I don't like the look of running braids, so I do either regular braids or kind of a net with pony tails, like you band it close to the top and then split the tails in half and band two halves together and then repeat all the way to the end. It's super cute. Of course my current gelding has a short and manageable enough mane (read sad and wimpy lol) that I don't bother putting it up at all and it never gets in the way. My last mare had a mane to the bottom of her shoulders and thick and slightly wavy, her forelock was almost down to the end of her nose, just tons of hair. Gorgeous but you couldn't even handle the reins doing slow work without it getting all tangled up in her mane so I got pretty quick at putting it up. |

Location: on the fine line between insanity and geniusness | Big braids are quicker and easier for me to do when I have multiple horses with me. Heck, usually I don't even get the entire mane done!! I put a few braids in on the back half- just enough to keep it out of my hands and call it good! |

I told my husband the other day the first time I grab a braid instead of reins I'm going to come home and just roach manes...they can keep them until then. |

Location: North Dakota | I don't because a running braid can easily be "rubbed out" by the horse while they are tied at the trailer.
I do a running braid when I show English but that's it. And that running braid is the very last thing I do before we show (minus changing my clothes) because I want it as tight and neat and possible for showing.
Otherwise "human braids" are what is easy to keep my horse's hair out of my hands during a barrel run, which is the whole reason that I braid for running barrels.

I have never seem a running braid on a barrel horse..  |

I used to do the braid all the time when I ran every weekend... I found it faster than teeny tiny braids and easier on my horses hair. I pull out gobs of hair with tiny tight braids. It took me maybe ten minutes to do the loose or semi tight running braid... And most of the time I can only scrounge up one rubber band... Or I just pull mine out of my own hair to tie up their mane....

Location: Texas | I usually divide the mane in half and put them in two buns... LOL.
But I do have a palomino with a lot of mane so I have been fish tailing her braids when I have the energy and motivation to actually braid her hair. I think the fish tail braids are pretty. I also fish tail braid up the mane and tails we give owners when we euthanize. I appreciated it when someone did that for me back when I lost one of mine.
I do the running braid sometimes but like I said right now I'm in the fish tail phase of my life haha |

How bad is it that on one trial ride my mare was sweating so bad under her mane that I took the clippy out of my hair and pulled as much mane as I could and clipped her up?!!! She felt better but I was hotter than all get out. . . . |

| I do fat braids or ponytails because a lot of the runs I'm at I'm also producing...I can get my gelding's mane sectioned into 4 ponytails in probably a minute or less! |

| A running braid is much faster to do than a 3 plait.
But like everyone has already said... they fall out easily.
I choose to just let my horses hair fly in the wind anyways. |

| A couple of our team roping horses have very long manes that get in the dally if not braided. Sometimes I do lots of small braids and other times I do the running, depends on my mood. |
