| I have a 3 month old baby that I have seen sleeping on his back, as in both hind feet straight in the air. He wasn't cast in the stall, but could easily get up. Did this twice yesterday. Has anyone had this happen?
Any concerns or reasons? |

| Have you dewormed foal? I had a yearling do that and she was heavily parasitized. |

| He has diarrhea, frothy mouth, sometimes grinds teeth, not really interested in nursing & not a great Appetite.
The veterinarian says he's just sleeping strange. And the diarrhea is something non-related. |

I say take the foal to a good horse vet, with all that you just listed sounds like he does have uclers. |

And most likely dehydrated and under nourished.sounds like he could be in big trouble if he don't get help soon. |

I would get a different vet out to come look at him. Laying on the back is a sign of discomfort/colic and I wouldn't wait much longer to see how he progresses. Babies can take a turn for the worse VERY quickly. I recommend having an equine vet out sooner rather than later and get this guy checked. |

Location: Texas | Usually I would think that's a sign of abdominal pain...especially combined with diarrhea and a decreased desire to nurse. Sick babies go downhill fast so to be on the safe side I would make an apt with an equine veterinarian...ideally one who specializes in internal medicine if possible. |

| I agree with the others that it is likely ulcers. I would recommend seeing a vet as soon as possible. Several years ago we had a baby develop ulcers, and it was the laying on the back that alerted us to it. Unfortunately our foal perforated and we lost him. I believe the vet had us put him on omeprazole and sucralfate. Definitely not something you want to wait around on as foals go downhill quickly. |

Location: Oklahoma | I had one that started doing this at about 2-3 months old, when he was really getting interested in hay, grain and grass. We tried all sorts of things and never got him fixed. By 6 months old he was having more colic problems and had more bad days then good. I had been working with the vets at Interstate Equine in Oklahoma. By the 7th month I couldn't watch him suffer and put him down. This was 11 or 12 years ago. HUGE vet bill.
I'd say try to keep your baby off solid food for a few days and I'd put him on THE Gastro plus slurry!! Yesterday! I didn't know about this stuff back then and I really think it could have made a difference. My baby was at his best when on Gastroguard and I can't remember the other drugs they had him on. Sorry I don't have a more positive report. Good luck

| Glad you got some answers. A friend of mines foal did this and we all just thought he was odd. Ended up having some sort of ulcer rupture and they lost him. He went on like this for like 18 months. |

Agree with this. Our 3 month old foal came in at feeding last Sunday with head noticeably carried low and went right into barn and laid down (passed me with feed bucket) and went straight into a roll. He rolled against the wall of the barn and laid there with his feet straight up in the air. I went and moved his feet away and made him get up - he would at times goes into a roll where he would thrash until I made him stop (got him up and moving). Got some banamine paste (now I keep it on hand!) and he was totally fine within 30 minutes. Not sure why he colic - who knows, it was the day before a cool front came in and we worked horses earlier in the day and possibly he got worked up when we separated his herd. Who knows.
Good luck! Keep us posted...I'm curious to know if you find out the issue and how he does. |
