I'm not really sure whether my older gelding is having breathing issues but I need some advice.  I still run him but sometimes even when I first pull him out of the pasture, he seems to be slightly wheezing.........but his mouth is shut so is he just normal or is there something I could do to help him breathe better, especially at a run!??  Hope this made sense!

If he is wheezing at rest then this would most definitely be something I would have your veterinarian check out. Could be multiple things but one of more common causes (if everything else is apparently normal, appetite attitude etc) is allergic airway disease otherwise commonly known as "heaves".

If this is the case there are treatment options out there, but generally you deal with this for the rest of their life. Environmental management is key with this disease (low dust environment, pasture turnout, wet down hay, no roundbales etc).

Any breathing issue will absolutely affect their performance- your veterinarian will best be able to tell you after a thorough exam what exactly may be going on and treatment options.

Breathing issues are nothing to mess around with. Could be just as simple as a resp infection down to some deeper issues.

Get him scoped asap.   As above posters have mentioned, heaves, COPD or could be nasopharyngeal cicatrix -a condition that causes scarring on the larynx restricting breathing to the point of needing a trachea.   I would not run or ride him if he is having trouble breathing.

Do this! Take to a vet that can do BAL on your horse.
