Location: East Texas | I am going to be teaching HS ag classes this year, and I thought in one of my classes I would have a weekly segment called "stuff you need to know how to do". Stuff like: how to switch out a light fixture or install a ceiling fan, change a tire, rewire a trailer, cut and glue pvc pipe, run a washer/dryer, etc. I know you guys can come up with a ton of ideas for this. So let's hear them. |

ANd know what they are. What types of drill bits to use - concrete, wood, etc. What type of screws to use, wood, metal.
What type of tape to use, duct, electrical, the white kind for water pipes. How to hang a picture and the correct items to use. How to change a water faucet. Inside and out. How to turn off the well.
How to make chains and what kind of hooks for towing. How to hook and unhook trailers. Just walk around while you are at your farm. The things we all take for granted, a million people don't know how to do.

My mom taught me about balancing the checkbook and it stuck with me. But I never learned how to A RUALLY budget. I was just paying bills and doing whatever the hell with the remainder. WRONG! Every dollar needs a name. Otherwise you're just eating it! |

Teaching how to give shots and what size needles would be helpful too. I see a lot of people want to DIY their vet stuff but haven't the foggiest of what they are doing and end up with abcesses and a big mess.

I am so amazed that when an accident happens (like for example a foreign object penetrating skin on animals or humans) people automatically want to pull the object out. What if that object is blocking a main vein and preventing animals or people from bleeding out? DON'T TOUCH IT! |

Location: Gainesville, TX | I am going to be a little bit of a negative nelly but not too bad. Budgeting, balancing a checkbook, etc are better for an economics class. BUT you could teach these things in relation to buying livestock or seed etc and make the household expenses part if the budget if they own a small farm OR what if they are trying to get a farm started how can they use income from a different job to get started. Maybe bring in an ag lender to talk to them about ag lending and downpayments. What about if they have to live in town, how to do a small garden or maybe chickens and goats in an urban environment. In terms of the medical stuff, whoa could you get in trouble there so ask a vet to come in and show them the basic stuff on giving a shot or wrapping a wound or emergency situations. But building or repairing fence, changing a tire, using basic power tools. All that stuff is great. I would give everything an ag slant though. If you want to talk about laundry for instance, talk about getting out certain kinds of stains out of your workshirt. ;) |

Perhaps you did not read the part where I posted that this is the lowest socio-economic area that I have ever taught in. I was going to describe my science class students but it is against the laws to give out that information. Seriously. I think I can say that they had learning difficulties. They will probably always be on assistance. Extremely basic life skills would be on the list of things they need.

What if that object is blocking a main vein and preventing animals or people from bleeding out? DON'T TOUCH IT! I learned this lesson this spring...but I was smart enough to NOT pull the foreign object out before I called the vet. I called the vet, sent her a picture, and she told me it was ok to pull it out (it was a nail in a hoof, but instead of going straight into the hoof, it went horizontal and into the frog), then packed it and bandaged it. Basic first aid in other words.
I think things like fencing are essential if you are going to be in ag and how to use fencing pliers, come-alongs, post pounders, etc. Also stacking hay would be beneficial (of course you could let them stack your own and accomplish dual purpose, LOL). Like others have said, balancing a checkbook...and making sure you put each debit/ATM transaction in as well, because those add up quickly. How to change a flat tire...so many people don't even know what a jack looks like or a lug wrench!
There are so many life skills that aren't being taught, I'm not sure where to quit with my list.

When you are out in the world and want to get noticed be the first to arrive and the last to leave. Get yourself noticed, put in what it takes. Kids generally seem to love Ag class and that sets up a great opportunity to mentor these kids. |

My job after finding a job a job for these students was to secure housing and transportation and then monitor them for 90 days.
I got 2 students from the advanced auto mechanic program jobs at Jasper Engines in Jasper, In. Most people have probably heard of Jasper Engines.
Anyway, got them apts and then we got them a car. These guys were asians and the top of the class.
I had them follow me to a gas station to fill up the car.
They em were standing around and came in the building where I was and asked me if I knew how to put gas in the car. I told them yes, don't you? They did not.
I had to show them how to put gas in a car. These were certified auto mechanics going to work for an engine building company. ??
If they had been culinary students I might not have been so surprised.
So so now I would say in answer to the question, show them how to put gas in a car. |

My 13 year old would have to tell him what to do! Invited my son over for steak and put it in the microwave for 30 minutes! Needless to say, they didn't have steak! |

Location: East Texas | Well, it has been 6 weeks since school started and it has been crazy busy and fun. I made a list of these and added a few others. We have been cleaning out the shop and getting organized. Off of the above list we have learned to use a broom and dust pan, washer/dryer, paint brush, etc. Was kind of amazing to see them try to figure those things out. This week we learned how to read a tape measure. Only one out of 90 students could figure out what the tick marks meant. Friday's assignment was to mark a sheet of plywood into 8 equal squares......there was a lot of head scratching going on, but we got there. This week we are learning to use a jig saw and cut out some fall/halloween decorations. |

Location: Louisiana | Didn't read all the replies, but my ideas for an Ag class...
How To:
tie a knot
change the oil in a car, brake pads, headlights, etc
tractor safety...I hear all too often about someone being run over by a tractor they stepped off of to work on
change a tire
ratchet strap 101...I may or may not have almost lost my husband's 4-wheeler bc I didn't use the straps properly LOL
towing safety
basic animal health...bandaging a wound, worming schedule, etc
hang a door or gate...
So many other things I can't think of currently. Maybe have an anonymous suggestion box so a student can submit something they don't know how to do but may not want to admit?
As a 27yo woman, I'm glad I had people in my life to show me these skills. I recently finished college (FINALLY) and landed a new job in an administrative position, and it is amazing what people don't know. Things I thought were common sense...I assure you my boss cannot do ANY of the above tasks without paying someone else to do them.

The gal I just hired to help in the office didn't know how to work a type writer or fax machine. |

Well, I nearly didn't get hired bc my only previous experience is retail, and only dummies work retail, right? (insert eye roll)
They were shocked I could use the fax and adding machines, so I guess that's common LOL. I also think they were shocked they didn't have to teach me phone manners, I was used to screening calls and taking messages already.
I want to add one thing to my list... MANNERS.
I was an extremely shy child. BUT, I knew how to speak to an adult. And I spoke when spoken to, maybe not very loudly, but I did!
MANY kids I've encountered have no idea how to talk to people...or how to use and count money. |

Meanest Teacher!!!

Location: sunny california | I took ag class in high school. we learned how to turn hay in the field by hand and to halter break colts. yep teacher got his hay turned and colts broke for free, but we got a fun A. we went on a ton of trips in fact it was almost every other day as the class was small and many had their own cars and follwed the teacher, prolly could not do that today. got to go to some horse trainers and see their best horses cut. this teacher also talked about retirement saving as he was getting ready to retire. that was the most fun class and prolly kept me from dropping out |
