Horse has been scoped, allergy tested, shots, etc. can go all day being worked and is legged up good. When he runs barrels he will occasionally have an attack when he can't breathe. Has been run on lasix and the attack still happens. What could be causing this? Flapper problem? Also looking for suggestions for a good respiratory vet. When the attack happens he hangs his head, mouth open, tongue out and literally cannot breathe. Horse has only been run about 6 times this year and is young- just starting to enter.

Have you done a dynamic scope (a type of scope that can be mounted on the horse and then you can go and make a run so the veterinarian can see exactly what the upper airway is doing during performance). If you have not done this yet, I would definitely recommend it. This is going to be your best bet at figuring out what is happening.

I've never heard of this. Where is it available?

What state are you in? A google search pulls up several vets who have it.

Where are you located? Quite a few veterinary hospitals have them nowadays.

I cant be of much help with Iowa, I'm sure there has to be someone in the state that has one. I would call around to the bigger name equine veterinary referral hospitals and see if they have one or can recommend someone who does.

If all else fails, Oakridge Equine Hospital in Edmond, OK does have one if hauling down here would be an option for you.
