I have a just turned three year old that is fat and happy on pasture. But he doesn't have have that finish/nice coat look that all my others have had. I don't have access to quality alfalfa or any alfalfa except for cubes from tractor supply. I got a big protein/mineral tub but he along with the others horse could care less for it. They also have a big redmens salt rock. Some people have suggested calf mana for a good all around supplement/grain. His riding scheduled is basically nothing right now. So maybe that's why he isn't looking they way I thought. I don't know...
I pulled my horses off of everything three months ago and am just feeding grass hay, a handful of soaked alfalfa cubes and Thunder Mountain Minerals. My horses look AMAZING, incredibly shiny...even more than when they were on Platinum Performance a few years ago. I chose TMM because it is a very complete mineral supplement. Super pleased with it. I get asked a lot what I feed more horses.
Three year olds have a lot going on. They are growing, and are going through a lot of mouth changes that make chewing properly painful. Your current diet would likely be short on protein if he is not eating the tub you provided. I would add the alfalfa cubes first, and see where he goes from there. Have his teeth checked if they have not been in the last six months.
