It's more about the prep than the bag itself. Braid tail tightly, fold it up into an oblong ball, electrical tape the ball, put a bag or sock over the ball and tie more than once to secure it. And a pet peeve of mine is when people bag above the tail bone. A tail bag should not go above the bone, and the feathers should all remain loose.
If you haven't used a Tail Boot you really need to. They are AWESOME! I live in horse fly central and these dudes stay on in the pasture. Have a great switch so the horse with a short tail finally has something to get those flies! The tail boot itself is neoprene and really hugs the tailbone and tail (doesn't get too tight) and the switch is made of colorful twine. I am currently on my third different brand of the summer. The first couple I tried I went through about 10 in a matter of two months. They would catch on the fence and rip the ends off. I just bought BioMane ones that were quite a bit more spendy so we will see! I have trouble keeping tail bags that tie in on horses as the braids inside come undone (rubber bands, hair ties, tried it all) and then where the tail bag is looped through no longer is relevant. So if anyone has advice on this please let me know!
I had the same issue...the tail bag was harder on my horses tail until I got this tail boot. You make regular braid in the tail and secure it with a rubberband. Fold that braid up and stuff it into the neoprene tail boot. Then thread a long piece of attached velcro through your braid then back to the boot. Close the other tabs and its on. Seriously the best thing I have tried and I have tried a few.

I almost ordered some and if these new bags don't work they are my next purchase. I worked for a reiner that did the same concept except instead of a boot it was vet wrap. It did work great just was expensive on vet wrap. I college rodeo'd with the creator of them and spoke to her about them when they first came out. To be honest I totally forgot about them after that though.
