Just bought a used coats saddle. What do you all that ride in coats use for a pad? Was thinking of just trying to pick up a used 5 star, but not sure which size might fit under the saddle best. Might end up having to get another pad depending on the fit, but I don't even have anything here to try it out once it gets here.

It really depends on your horses back. Is your horse round? racier? butt high?  There isn't a 1 pad fits all- but dang how I wish there was!

Been using the saddle a couple weeks on my horse. I've tried about half a dozen other saddles on him and this is the only one that doesn't have too much rock and is not popping up in the back. He is very straight backed, slightly downhill and has some wither pockets that need to fill out. It seems to fit him smoothly, except for the pockets, but I am not getting very even sweat marks. He usually dry in the center of the saddle. He does not seem sore anywhere and doesn't seem bothered at all when working. Been using a saddleright pad. Its a bit too long for his back so I'd like to find something else.
My other horse, the saddleright doesn't seem to be quite thick enough. He tends to sweat a LOT and when I pull the pad off there is so much heat. I'd like to find something more breathable. I just don't know what to try.

All I have are 5 Stars, mine are 3/4, 1/2 and I have a 7/8 thickness.. Sounds like you may need to try a 1/2 or a 3/4 thicknees on your horse if you feel like the saddleright is not thick enough and theres not much heat under my pads after a ride. And I like useing a BOT liner under my pads to, just really works well for me and keeps my 5 Stars clean too.

I used a 1/2" 5 star with mine at first. It was ok, but, then I bought a balace pad. I really liked that pad. http://www.coatssaddlery.com/balancepad.html

Thanks.
I was watching the videos of the balance pad and then some of the others on fitting... now I am thinking my saddle might just be too wide for them both!

Love, love, love the Extreme Cutback pads that Caldwell Saddlery had made by Diamond Wool.  The longer cutback allows the pad to stay where you put it because it provides enough room for the withers. This means your saddle will stay where you put it because the pad is fighting the withers.
