What reins do you ride in when your not barrel racing? I'm in a pair of roper/barrel reins and they are great for racing, but just too short for riding in general. Thinking of getting a pair of split reins to ride in any other time? What do you think? He is very light in the mouth.

I love English reins or when I can find them, extra long roping reins.

I ride in English laced reins, pony length. I wish they were just a smidge heavier. There's not quite enough signal when I lift them. I've used split reins and like them a lot, but be careful. Not all split reins are created equal.

I personally like mule tape reins or reins made out of team ropes (I rope with just a single rein and exercise/work horses in split reins). They both are soft and feel good in your hands!

At least you spelled rein correctly. A "trainer" that lives around here spells it reigns. Drives me nuts. That being said, I have quite a few pairs of Steve Davis' reins. One is just plain brown and I keep them a longer length for riding at home.

I am picky on my reins and his are the best. They are the right weight and feel and super soft and supple.

I prefer split reins, at all times at home. I only put on the barrel reins when I'm litterally running. Plus, they are too short for my mare to do anything but run with them. I like to stay out of her face and when her headset is relaxed, I prefer the freedom split reins provide.

No way Jose. Have you not ridden in split reins before? They cross over the horse's neck and your hands kind of make a bridge with the reins. You may want to watch some youtube videos. It takes a little practice but you have arguably more control and more freedom as a rider with split reins when you're working with one.

You can get split reins with keepers on them so you wont be having to tie them in a knot, The only time I use split reins is when I'm working with a young horse.. You need to get you some good leather roping reins, then you dont have to be worring about losing a rein. Are some longer barrel reins..

If you don't know how to use split reins, I would suggest buying a pair of 8 ft roping reins to ride around in.  Then you could put clips on both ends of each pair and just switch them out easily.

Those are nice too. You can get these leather laced barrel racing reins too, they are long and can be adjusted to the lenght you like, I have a few of these myself and the nylon reins are good too, get them long and you can adjusted them also.

Split reins.

But there are so many types. I would recommend going to a tack store and just holding them.
Quality of leather and thickness make a big difference.
