| what would cause a mare to rub the top of her tail out? this has been going on for a while now and im at a loss. shes been dewormed, had multiple fecal tests done, all clear. on a balanced and high quality diet that shouldnt be lacking any nutrients. ideas?? |

| Sometimes it's pinworms around anus. Put wormer around anus for 3 days, pull the small hair on hair could be ingrown hair too from rubbing. I use the TMG oniment it helps replace hair ,, one of my mares rubs when in heat. I give this one mare a shot of medroxprogesterone. Get from vet, get her out if heat within 24 hrs. I put the TMG on her tail to prevent breakage, |

Location: Do I hear Banjos? | I have seen mares rub when they are itchy and need their bag/teats cleaned. That area can get gunky and needs a wash from time to time.

Location: Southern Indiana | I've found it's usually from ticks! When they are rubbing really bad I'll usually find one or where there has recently been on. I put Nustock where they rub and they will quit.
I had a tiny little tick myself at the base of my neck/hairline and it was itching me. I can totally understand why the horses rub like crazy. |

This ^^^^ I would be checking for ticks, the ticks have been terrible around here latley..And if your mare is sweating alot rinse her down in the evenings rise under her tail and between her back legs get all the dry sweat off.. |

Location: on my horse | I have a gelding that does that, everything negative current on wormer, no ticks, no pin worms, healthy skin, balanced diet. We figured out that it was the gnats bothering him and landing on his hind end on/around his tail and sheath so now I just lift his tail and spritz fly spray under it in the morning and when I get home from work. Problem solved! |

Location: Ohio girl moved to PA | anytime my geldings start rubbing, its always due to their sheaths needing cleaned. I swear i have to do my one geldings at least once a month. Idk why he gets so nasty! |

| I just started using a spray called Banixx I got at my feed store. Valley Vet has it also. Started Saturday and it has already started to clear up. My mare was rubbing her tail and butt a lot and would kick out when it was bothering her. |
