Location: Northwest | Not sure, but I just had a DNA test (Wisdom Panel) run on my shelter rescue and it was super cool to see that our guesses ended up being pretty close to what she and her puppies were! BTW we adopted this dog and one month later she ended up having 8 puppies; we had no idea she was prego so that was quite a surprise when she started showing Anyways, highly recommend having the test done! |

I'd say rat terrier more than Jack russell. These are my two Rats. One reg and one mini.
You have a good eye!!
Everyone used to own at least one feist as a farm and small game hunting dog which
they excelled at. Then everyone started to move to town and the states took the
bounty off of coyotes and the feist dogs disappeared as fast as burgers at a
drive thru window... lol
Very smart family dogs and could trail, eye or wind a squirrels position even if only
his feet were showing while limb hugging high up in a tree. This is where the saying
of aim for an ear or an eye ... because that is the only thing besides feet you might
be able to see. .. You could cue the dog to move to the other side of the tree so the
squirrel would adjust his position so you could get a clean shot ... lol
By selective breeding across the USA a multi-colored dog was listed as a Rat Terrier
and accepted by AKC.
OP's puppy has many characteristics of the original feist "mountain dogs". As noted
he has been overly handled and his eyes say he has lost his confidence in being a
holy terror .... ooooops terrier.. lol
This is an interesting post on an American bred dog's history and demise when towns
turned into cities ...
http://huntingdawgs.com/hd1_index_Mtn_feist_squirrel_dogs.html
My favorite feist growing up was white with black spots with tan highlights on his face.
I got him at 2-3 weeks old due to the age of his Mama and failing health with too many
puppies. After feeding him, he would lay on the floor in front of a wood stove and moan
and groan so full he looked like a big bubble ... Bubbles became his name for life .. lol
