| I took a brake from riding send focused on life. Put on about 20lbs too. Now I cannot keep my feet in front of me!!! I have no balance I'm constantly behind my horse and getting thrown forward so hard I even brusied the instead of my hand. I feel old and fat and the boyfriend flat out tells me "your boy is really working but your all over him and your feet behind you" I'm running. I'm trying to loose the weight. But dear God why didn't someone say it's not like riding a bike once you take a brake ?? Vent with me, give advice, commiserate....but PLEASE tell me there is hope and I can one day actually not look like whiplash the monkey again. |

Location: Texas | I totally agree! Even after just a little time off, it takes me a couple of weeks to get back to riding right. I did notice that recently when I started going back to the gym (using resistance & core training) I got my core back faster & it showed in my riding right away. I really miss being 30 LOL |

Location: Ohio girl moved to PA | If i dont ride for 2+ weeks i can tell! i couldnt imagine taking any longer off than that. Its hard, Riding is one of the toughest things to do. You just have to work at it everyday. start small. perfect your post at the trot before you work on your seat at the canter. ride bareback, it will help with balance and strength. I try to ride bareback atleast twice a week and it really helps! Good luck! youll get back into it! |

Location: Texas | Completely understand how you feel! 3 years ago I was running at cpra and pro rodeos. I'v took off having a baby getting married having a hip replacement and iv gained 60 lbs!! ! boy is it kicking my butt really hurts my pride. I'm just happy to hit the 5 D at this point and stay on my horse! I do feel stronger the more I ride. I'v just got to stay focused suck up my pride and keep at it! It is a hard pill to swallow knowing how I was running just 3 years ago vs today . But like any athlete I understand I have to get core strength back and balance! You can do its all timing at this point. I can tell you what I have been working on and that is loping figure 8s with my feet out of my stirrups and roll backs on the fence picking up speed slowly and I feel like it has been helping! |

Location: on the fine line between insanity and geniusness | Girlllll, I feel your pain!! I had a baby in December. I spent the last 4 months of my pregnancy on bedrest and gained about 70 lbs while pregnant. After I had my sweet precious Brody the first barrel race I went back to was as terrifying as a haunted house!! I thought I was going SUPER fast- my brutally honest fiancé highlighted that I broke down to a trot going around the first barrel! I did win a 3D check and didn't fall off, so I thought I was successful!! Keep going, build your core strength, rebuild your muscle memory.. it gets better! It's takes a while, Brody is NINE MONTHS old and I just now feel like I'm riding like myself. I had never taken a long break before, I had been off 4 months for hip surgery but never a year... it's hard! Core strength and muscle memory are the key! |

| Wanted to let you know you're not alone. Left horses for five years (my own dumb fault) and came back and still feel a bit like a train wreck but it does slowly come back together. |

| I agree with everyone else. I have been off for a while (longer than you), gained a bunch (40+) of weight, and it takes time and hard work to get back there. I have been training my brain more than my body, and my mind is where it needs to be but the booty is still behind. (Pun intended). Hang in there, you'll get it back. |

| Thanks everyone!! I've just had my sucker in the dirt and I'm just plain out mad about my sucky attitude. I need to get my mojo back!
I'm running working towards running a half marathon, I cleaned up my eating habits, i'm slowing adding in lifting weights, BUT I tell you what this weight is coming off so slow it might be next winter before I'm back to my normal size and strength.
I need to ride more bareback. I need to ride more period the 30-40 mins a night just aint getting it....this dang work thing gets in the way though!

| Just a suggestion but true. If you are riding in the same saddle that you had before adding 20 pounds, that is probably a big part of you problem. |

The first time I rode a bike after my amputation was comical to say the least. The actual getting on and getting going wasn't too bad (with help, of course). I rode for quite I while and truly enjoyed it. Until it came time to get off. I was riding someone else's bike (like a 10 speed or something, that I knew nothing about). I had my bf lined up to help me slow down/get stopped-----weelll, I came in hot and he was doing like 12 mph running trying to catch up to me to get me stopped without me falling over and landing on my head probably. He missed me on the first pass. . . . But I got turned around and made that second fly by and he caught me
Looking back it's so funny, but when it was happening, all I could think about was how to explain to my mother I broke my one good leg AND prosthesis at the same time and would be missing at least the first month of college

| In 2011 I started running barrels again after about 15yrs away from competition now I had been riding and training but not racing. Oh my gosh I thought I was going to die! It all happened so fast and I felt lost every jump. Then my horse got hurt and I went back to just riding babies well this year my little mare was ready to go and once again I thought I was going to die. I have been back running about a month and finally feeling like I know what I am doing. It just takes some time and confidence again. I wanted to quit everyday. |
