I ride her in a hackamore but it doesn't have the needed lift. This mare is like a firebreathing Dragon , she is respectful but gets "on the bit" she ended up stepping on her reins and cut her tongue pretty good. I had a PC twisted with a low port and she actually loved this bit. At this point we have been running not so great because I am lacking in few things with what I have available. This is the kind of mare needs to ride in something different every day just to keep her from leaning . Any ideas. She has a fair amount of set . She despises draw bits, chain mouthpieces and does not like to much gag on it. Need something that might go sit above the injury. Thanks.

I have had good luck with a myler hinge port small gag on it. I have a mare who hate tongue pressure but loves this bit. I think they have them in different shank lengths.

We have found ourselves with several horses purchased that had OLD tongue injuries. Since your horse does not like a chain, and the hack you tried ( perhaps a different hack might work?), how about a Rutledge Roper? The wide bar and little bit of port give the tongue a little room and comfort. The swivel also can take a little speed off of the hands.

I kind of think time off? I just can't think of any bit that wouldn't touch that tongue if she moved it back and forth. I had a young mare step on her reins and cut her tongue really bad. I didn't ride her for a week or 2. Can't remember how long but they heal really fast.

I just got one in to work on who has had his mouth really tore up lately he won't be in a bit for a long time if ever again. I ride him in a bosal or other hack right now, feel pretty bad for him he was even having trouble eating.

I'd try a correctional bit. It'll provide tongue relief while also giving you enough control. It'll help with her leaning too. Jim Edwards has the largest variety and best made. There was actually a racers edge episode on his bits, very helpful information.

My mare fell at a barrel race and almost cut her tongue off. I can't use any bit in her. I use a Stiver hack. It has lift and it enough to keep her in check when she gets on the muscle.
