| The hubs got me a cactus CJ saddle for last years anniversary. It fits wide in the front and sits down a bit on my horses withers. My horse is pretty sizeable, hard to imagine something too wide for him. I dont want to part with the saddle because it was a gift and hubby tried hard. So I need a shimmed pad to fill out the excess space and help this thing fit. Suggestions on pads? |

I know the saddle was a gift and is sentimental and I get that ... but does it truly fit your horse? Ask yourself that honest question with no emotions attached. If it is sitting on his withers, I am sorry, but it does not fit. Period.
This is coming from someone who was using a shim all summer and now my horse has a white spot. Part of it WAS my fault and not having the shim placed correctly, but something to think about anyway. And my saddle was NOT sitting on the withers - was just a bit wide in front.

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | If this saddle dont fit its not going to ever fit even with shiming.. A saddle that sits on withers is going to sore up you horse, why chance it. |

Location: Central Texas | I have a wide tree Cactus CJ that is too narrow for a mare of mine and too wide for the others. One gelding has relatively high withers on a narrow body. What is working for me is a Thinline pad with inserts, or without inserts and a CJ pad underneath. Also, I sometimes use an SPH pad with a navajo underneath it. I like the SPH on high withered horses, because of the wither relief. Good luck! |

I will have to try one of those. I saw Sarah McDonald riding them on her colts in person and they looked very thick. |
