My MIL has a small Chiuahua (sp?) Mix that is starting to have some joint problems.
She had decided that MILK
of all things would be good to give the little dog but it's upsetting his stomach (obviously) and he's now not eating at all and he's weak.
( I see her thought process but bless her heart milk was the worst thing to give this dog. He's been drinking milk 3 times a day for 2 weeks straight...

She's finally open to the idea of me bringing over some supplements since her idea isn't working.

My questions:
1.) Can I give the dog probiotics to help with the upset stomach or should I suggest she take him to the vet for that?
2.) Would you prefer Lubrisyn, Actiflex for dogs, or Cetyl M for joint support?
3.) Is there an electrolyte I can add to his water or maybe give him through a syringe?
4.) Would it be counteractive to feed this dog a Natural wet dog food or should I stick with a dry dog food? (Ol' Roy and Beneful aren't helping either... Going to grab better feed for him on my way over there tonight.

I'd get him to the vet first. Going that long without actual food could have really messed something up. I really liked how well the lubrisyn for dogs worked! Has he ever been on a wet food before? I wouldn't suggest anything out of the norm since his stomach has already gone through so much. But then again, i'm no vet.

I think treating at a vet would be a good idea. We have started feeding a can of sardines to our senior Chihuahua. She has bad allergies, was itching constantly, and shedding a ton. Along with medicine, it has really helped her.

Thank you both for your replies.
Ohio, that's what I was thinking as well as far as the wet food went.

Should I just get a wellness exam for the dog or should I ask for the vet to look for something specific?

I'm not even sure what vet she uses.... Maybe I will call my vet and get a consult over the phone first?

Oh lordy milk is the worst for a seniors little tummy.. Was he eating any solid food at all? Yep take the little fella to your vet and just go from there, I have a really old senior winnie that I rescued last year and I feed a moist food in the morning, her joints are weak to but she seems to be doing really well and her little friend gets the same that was with her when I found them and then they have a small bite dry food offered to them 25/7.

Thanks Roxie.
He was eating dry food just fine he just started having trouble keeping up. Problems started when she started giving him milk.
He eats a little bite here and there but I wouldn't consider it eating. I placed a call to my vet earlier and she suggested a few things for him. If he isn't back to eating all his food in a day or two she wants to see him.

Yes he still has every tooth which is odd for a Chihuahua I hear...

Some Kind of Trouble

He could be dehydrated if he has some tummy problems from the milk, making him weaker.  If he goes back to eating and drinking normally without the milk, so you don't have to go to the vet, I would gradually change him to a senior food (most are formulated for joint support) and slowly add some wet to the dry if he needs encouragement to eat.

Thanks Dodge. I have a senior feed for him that I'm going to tell her to gradually change him over too. Whether or not she listens and makes it gradual we will see...
Anyway, It has probiotics mixed in along with Omega 3 and 5 fatty acids. I think I grabbed the Nurti Source brand? Maybe? Hoping that's an Okay brand. I usually feed Taste of the Wild but the feed store was out of the senior blend in that brand....

Have her check his poop.Is it black or dark?if it is it could be blood.my beagle had a HORRIBLE bout of pancreatitis when I simply changed from salmon to chicken.I would go to vet and buy a few cans of the wet food for that.its a special food.i had to keep him on it for ten days and slowly start him back on his food with pumpkin added. If it is his pancreas,he needs something special, and maybe some meds.

He needs to go to the vet for a complete blood panel, if you can afford that. It will tell you if he has any organ damage from dehydration or his poor diet. After that, just go with the vet's recommendations for bringing him back to health.

Cheap food will sustain life, but it leaves a lot of holes in his nutritional needs and causes problems down the road. Hope he's ok. Please do update later.

I absolutely swear by Fresh Factors from Springtime. They have kept several of our dogs going for a LONG, LONG time. Dad's German Shepard made it to age 16.

Update:
Eating and drinking regularly. Still not getting around very easily but the OTC meds should start getting into his system soon.
He is transitioning to Nutri Source Senior feed with pro and prebiotics, omega 3 and 6 and easy digest formula already mixed in the feed. He also is on AspirEaze (Asprin) for his joint pain while the Actiflex for Dogs gets into his system.
Crossing our fingers this works.
