I used to have that problem years ago. I make sure that I worm before the first cold snap. Around here usually about Sept 1. Also I give electrolytes. As the vet said, a very cheap preventative. Often with s weather change, a horse may not drink as much.

If the horse does not drink well the electrolytes will not be helpful..and will not make them drink.
We give rice bran water or soupy beet pulp mashes with big weather swings.
My vet recommended salt. We add a teaspoon to their grain. Also when temp below 40 we give hot water. Our horses love it on cold mornings, like coffee or hot chocolate

I will be sure and tell my vet that. He handed my a bucket of electrolytes as we left the vet clinic from collick and 4 jugs of fluids.
MVP Gastro-Plex works well for digestive issues and is also good for ulcer prevention. I have all my horses on Gastro-Plex pellets. If you'd like info on it please pm me & I can discuss any offers we have going on right now as well.

My vet said same thing NEVER EVER give electorlytes or salt to a horse that is NOT drinking well, she said that it would make the problem even worse.

yes they need to drink for extra electrolytes
make their grain soupy and we add warm beet pulp to every feeding soupy.. the key is to get fluid to their gut.

look you don't have to be a jerk. any decent vet will tell you E-lytes alone will not do any good WITHOUT the darn fluids he clearly gave you. As I said IF the Horse isn't drinking well...they do no good! Geez...some peoples kids

If you are going to get "snarky" be sure to spell correctly ..... "colic" And TrailGirl IS correct ....if the horse won't drink in cold weather, electrolytes in water are WORTHLESS (however, they do make an electrolyte paste) ...... OR ..... you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink ...... LOL
