My mare was injured in August with a ligament pull. She was off for 2 months and I recently brought her back slowly to riding. It’s been a month since she’s been limp free and I’ve been riding her again. I have a race in two weeks that I’d like to take her to but is it too soon? She is fit enough and working nicely but is there a chance she might re injure herself? It will be 34 days at the time of the race since I started riding her again.
Thanks,
CAMequine

Have you contacted you vet and asked what he/she thinks? Has your horse been seen again by your vet to recheck the injury? she may be working fine but she also may not be completely healed. I would say check with you vet first if you havent, they will know best..

I would not be running her, not enought time for the healing. If she were hurt in August and its only mid October your going to be hurting her again, if my horse I would give at least 6 months of healing and vet check befor I asked her to start working again. But thats me, everybody is different but I want to make sure my horse is feeling right befor asking them to run.

Thank you for the replies. I haven’t gotten a vet out to see her but had a very experienced farrier and two experienced horsemen look at her earlier. I have decided to not run her because everything I have read says to give her more time so I will run my other guy.
Thanks!!!

I know pulled tendons are recommended for 6 months off and then start working again slowly, so I would think a ligament pull would be similar. I pulled a ligament once a few years ago and it was close to 8 moths for me to feel like it was healed. I stopped limping on it & the pain went away, but it still didn't quite feel right to me. I didn't follow Dr orders and its never really been back to normal probably because of it. I would think maybe it's the same way for them?

Good choice (: I have learned over the years that it's always better safe than sorry!
