I just moved down here and have noticed these weird scabs on my horses legs. One of my mares got it pretty bad on all 4, the other only got a little. Its not scratches, theyre like mosquito bite sized scabs.
I used betadine and furazone, but they seem to not completely stay away. Never had this issue where I lived previously. Is it a weed allergy or bugs or what?

We have a number of friendly flies in Tx that like to bite on horses and
lay an egg in the bite wound that creates a bump and when the
larvae die they create a pus hole which creates the crusty area.

The major species is horn flies that do this ... you should begin to
find other bumps higher up on their body over winter time all
headed for the center of the horses back.

The larvae cannot live on horses blood so they die and make a small
abscess that eventually opens up with the larvae's help trying to
escape death.. lol

I use a home made solution in a qt spray bottle to put on these bumps
open or closed and also for any other scritches or scrapes they
end up on a daily basis ... it is simple add one ounce of strong
iodine 6-7% variety and add plain old cooking corn oil ...
Just put a small squirt on the bump.. use your finger to work
it down into the hair .... if you ever have a horse that wants to
to chew on a wound ... add a half block of fake camphor to this
solution after grating up with a cheese grater and spray on
the wound .. it stinks, tastes bad and horse
stops chewing on himself. I use this also if a wound is leaking
down below to prevent the crud from blistering the horse ..

Here is a post I made in the spider post that a new Texan needs to
know.
The bottom Permectrin II is the best fly spray I have ever made or
bought. I mix up a gallon in a milk jug and then use a qt spray bottle
to lightly mist a horses hair ..
So follow the directions ... it only takes a very small amount ..
**************************************************
**************************************************
Use a broom and then water spray your barn down to clear all
the dust and webs ....

Let dry with fans or doors opened for 3-4 hours and then use
one of these products below per the instructions ....

Either one specializes in killing spiders which are tuff to get
rid of.... You will be amazed at the overall barrier for flies and
other insects that will happen .... Stray flies flying into you barn
door will turn into kamikaze pilots as they hit the ground dead as
a door nail ...

This comes in spray cans too and can be bought at Lowes or
Home Depot .... TERRO ...
https://www.fleetfarm.com/detail/terro-ready-to-use-home-insect-kill...

***********************************************************
This one is a concentrate and makes several gallons ... if you are quick
enough you can use a garden sprayer on the end of a water hose to
spray the barn down ..
I usually keep horses out of the barn all day or all night for this stuff to
dry .. no fumes or anything ... just my personal precaution ..

This one can be mixed up by the gallon with a few cc's to make a great
on the horse fly spray.. use a shot syringe to measure ... no more bot
or horse flies .... just mist your horses is all you need to do ..
I buy it from Jeffers ...
https://www.jefferspet.com/products/permectrin-ii?via=5338848b9fa260...

Both Works in your house or garage etc ..
***************************************************
***************************************************
If no one has told you about brown recluse spiders .. google and get
the horror these small spiders can do to your body. I spray some
of the Terro on the closet floors and close the door. Hopefully
if anything is in there they are now dead ... They hide in the arms
and legs of your clothes .... don't forget your trailers dressing room
or LQ ... tack room ... lol

WELCOME TO TEXAS!!

ALL OF THIS^
I have been bitten twice by a brown recluse and once by a fiddle back. My skin literally had to wrot from the inside out and I had to hope and pray new skin would grow so that I didn't have t do a skin graft... I was younger and had to miss about a month's worth of school all together. Each bite happened seperately. Once I got one to start healing I got another bite. IT WAS WHILE I WAS SLEEPING. (Insert visible shudder
Anyway, we spray with Permectrin and spray the perimeter of our houses with it as well. We keep it on hand. We still have flies and spiders pretty bad at our house. We spray for them year round.

In fact, the spiders at our house were so bad that the previous owners taped warnings in every cabinet and on every door. Even had pictures of the spiders on the print outs. It said something to the effect of: "Warning, dangerous/deadly to animals and people. These spiders are not to be left alive!"
They are who we got the Permectrin idea from, it was taped to the front door when we went to look at the house lol .
