Of course it is totally at your discression to answer.

Just curious how some of you came up with the funds for your higher priced horses. Did you save, finance, liquidate other assets..

I've been wanting to buy a nice full bred prospect for about three or four years now and I think we would have bought one by now if I didn't have 2 kids in that time. Just leaving and using tax money from saving that LOL. Our goal is also to buy more in the fall to winter time when horses are price cheaper.

My highest priced barrel horse was 5250.  My parents gave me their camper to sell and I had to do the work to sell it.  I did that and came up with 3500.  The rest they sprung for.  That was almost 20 years ago.
I'm still too poor for a high ticket barrel horse and will probably never go much higher than 8K, just because I'm terrified of buying something super expensive and having it be injured or die on me because that's just my luck.  Insurance or not.

I paid cash. I waited for a horse I could afford. I have friends who deal in running horse bloodlines and was able to get one that had come through the Ada Sale. This was 40 years ago. I still get horses from the same people and pick up a good buy on the internet once in awhile. I mainly raise my own now.

I don't believe in financing a purchase such as a horse. I use what money I have saved. Although, I will say, I have never paid more than $3,000 and I have had some nice horses. I (and this sounds bad) usually find deals where people are desparate to sell, or I buy one needing work and make it into what I want.

I saved $500 from 3 birthdays as a little girl. My dad brought home 5 bottle calves for me and I ended up traded two heifers and that $500 for my first horse.

The most I've ever spent out of pocket was $3500 back in highschool and my dad wrote the check. I worked it off at $0.50/Hour working for my dad and mom inside and out of the house. They also took out "taxes" from my "paychecks".

ETA: My friend is treating her savings account like a bill. Each check she pays that "bill". Pretty smart.

I am currently in that process now. I am quite literally saving every penny and cutting unnecessary expenses. I have really reduced how much I eat out, got rid of the subscription services (Onstar, etc), sold extra tack ( and will be selling some nicer clothes ), and am doing money saving apps like Ibotta.

Blood, sweat, tears, tons of entry fees, and a small amount of cash.
Oh wait, is $2750 not a big ticket barrel horse? LOL.

In all honesty, I've been very fortunate to pick out a couple of talented prospects that were priced low, and I did the training & seasoning to make them "big ticket" barrel horses. They certainly weren't top notch the first time I entered them or heck even the first 2-3 years. With all the time and money I put into them it might have been cheaper (darn sure easier) to just get a loan and buy a finished one.

The third one I rodeoed on this summer was bought super cheap as a fix-it & flip-it project that I decided to try on crappy rodeo ground only to discover that he rocks on hard ground so he's not going anywhere. He did come with a nasty gate issue, but I have a pretty good gate escort/boyfriend and we have pretty much got the gate issue licked.

I needed to downsize anyway, so I sold 4 younger/started horses and bought one.

ETA to add - she wasn't even a barrel horse at the time of purchase - just a well bred 3yo - but she was 5 digits. She's the palomino in my avatar :)

I'm curious how people actually purchase the 15k+ horses. I paid cash for a $6500 horse, but that was only 6500. Do you also pay cash for these big ticket horses? Wire transfer?
