Looking to insure a new horse and have never done this before so I need advice, who, what to cover and is it expensive!!

THey are all pretty much the same. Pick a company with good claims responses etc. Your base policy will be a % of the horses value. SO I believe mine is 3%. Plus you can add medical, major medical, and few others on top of that. Its usually 400-500 extra a year for the major medical. Each year you can change your coverage based on horse value, etc.

Find a company with a rep that is local. Ask around at local shows and interview each company to ge thte best feel. I think most are pretty much the same in coverage and price. Just depends on claim times, etc.

 I have had very good expereinces with Markel, both major medical and mortaility.  I have had vets tell me they weren't the easiest to work with on their side, but I have had good luck.
