This is kind of a PSA post. I had 4 horses until about a week ago. 2 boys (stud colt & gelding), 2 mares. The boys came sup with tiny scabs all over their top lines & butts. It was painful for me to scrape them off. No hair came with the scabs. My first thought at seeing it was rainrot, but like I said painful, not clumps & no hair. Anywho, fast forward- I bathed them in antimicrobial shampoo and applied dilute idiodine to the bay after talking with the vet. She said she has seen this is the winter once before, this is how they treated it but never found out what it was. I work at a feedstore. Had a lady come in that owns several horses and said one of her mares come up like this. She spoke with her vet that is more of a rural vet (mine is more performance- fancy horse type). He said he's seen 7 others just this week like this. It's the flies. They are gathering on their top lines (those tiny biting flies that get slow in the cold that you can usually squish by hand) and bitting them a million times causing scabs that won't turn lose so it hurts to removed them. He said bathe them if you can (weather) and lather them up in duration to soften the scabs and get them to turn loose.

I have pictures of anyone is interested. I'm going to lather hen in furs in today. I was waiting on the rain to pass. Hope this helps someone. I was at a loss.

My big boy has it under his belly. I put corona on it after we ride, it keeps the scabs softer and the flies can't get to them. Usually the scabs will go away after a couple of days.
And then they will move it to a slightly different spot and we start alover again....

Yes, please post pictures that you have.  My mare has something similar and maybe the same thing on her lower back and top of her butt. There are hundreds of tiny, tiny bumps that do scab and come off if you scratch at them.  I thought the same as you, rain rot, or maybe that her dirty winter blanket I put on her a week or so ago might have caused it so I took it off and left it off.  I am also in Oklahoma.

Posted this to help a new TEXAN with the same problem per above ..

We have a number of friendly flies in Tx that like to bite on horses and
lay an egg in the bite wound that creates a bump and when the
larvae die they create a pus hole which creates the crusty area.

The major species is horn flies that do this ... you should begin to
find other bumps higher up on their body over winter time all
headed for the center of the horses back.

The larvae cannot live on horses blood so they die and make a small
abscess that eventually opens up with the larvae's help trying to
escape death.. lol

I use a home made solution in a qt spray bottle to put on these bumps
open or closed and also for any other scritches or scrapes they
end up on a daily basis ... it is simple add one ounce of strong
iodine 6-7% variety and add plain old cooking corn oil ...
Just put a small squirt on the bump.. use your finger to work
it down into the hair .... if you ever have a horse that wants to
to chew on a wound ... add a half block of fake camphor to this
solution after grating up with a cheese grater and spray on
the wound .. it stinks, tastes bad and horse
stops chewing on himself. I use this also if a wound is leaking
down below to prevent the crud from blistering the horse ..

Here is a post I made in the spider post that a new Texan needs to
know.
The bottom Permectrin II is the best fly spray I have ever made or
bought. I mix up a gallon in a milk jug and then use a qt spray bottle
to lightly mist a horses hair ..
So follow the directions ... it only takes a very small amount ..
**************************************************
**************************************************
Use a broom and then water spray your barn down to clear all
the dust and webs ....

Let dry with fans or doors opened for 3-4 hours and then use
one of these products below per the instructions ....

Either one specializes in killing spiders which are tuff to get
rid of.... You will be amazed at the overall barrier for flies and
other insects that will happen .... Stray flies flying into you barn
door will turn into kamikaze pilots as they hit the ground dead as
a door nail ...

This comes in spray cans too and can be bought at Lowes or
Home Depot .... TERRO ...
https://www.fleetfarm.com/detail/terro-ready-to-use-home-insect-kill...

***********************************************************
This one is a concentrate and makes several gallons ... if you are quick
enough you can use a garden sprayer on the end of a water hose to
spray the barn down ..
I usually keep horses out of the barn all day or all night for this stuff to
dry .. no fumes or anything ... just my personal precaution ..

This one can be mixed up by the gallon with a few cc's to make a great
on the horse fly spray.. use a shot syringe to measure the cc/ml ...
no more bot or horse flies .... just mist your horses is all you need to do ..
I buy it from Jeffers ...

My gelding has the same thing. At first I thought he had an allergic to something and tonight I thought maybe rain rot but he is only outside at night. I was getting so frustrated as to what the heck he had. Flies have always seemed to love him for some reason. So I guess I shouldn’t worry to much, it just look terrible. What state are you in?

Dealing with the same thing in LA... Thought it was rainrot but it isn't, and one horse just rubbed his whole tail out scratching.
Vet told us to mix up cattle fly spray and mist them all down with it. Hoping it works bc the ones affected are miserable.
