Sooo I just got out of a 5+ year relationship. (Don't feel bad, it was a bad situation and now I'm FREEEE)

Anway I have 4 horses in total and now that I no longer have them on his families property, I'm paying $375 a horse for board. And I just can't realistically afford that. The foal is free, but only for now.

Horse #1- 17 yr old grade mare that I've had since she was 3 yrs old. I will 100% not even consider selling her. I am hoping to lease her out.

Horse #2- 5 Yr old Black Andalusian soon to be gelding. I got him when he was 7mo old and he was my ultimate dream horse. We click really well and I FINALLY just bought a saddle that fits him so I can start riding him. The dilema with him-he's an Andalusian and I want to barrel race. He's super sensitive and I'd have to be careful about who his new owners are.

Horse #3-Own daughter of Feature Mr Jess. Coming 8 yrs in January. Off the track, had been started on barrels before she was traded as a broodmare. She has produced two foals this year and the year prior. I haven't had a change to really ride her yet to see if I'd like her as my barrel horse-I've only ridden her for short light rides-so far what I know is shes super sweet, calm and really soft in the face.

Horse #4- 4 mo old Filly out mare listed above. Sire is Valiant Master, so she is all running bred. She is a super sweet little filly and I could have big dreams for her. My problem with her, is I'd be doing the waiting game all over again-however waiting for her to grow up might pay off in the end

Sorry for the extremely long post, but I would just like some insight. I have no horse-people friends and they are all like kids to me. It makes me sick when people just say to "get rid" of them.

I've never sold any horses, so the thought of doing so bothers me; but I need to grow up and face reality.

In reality I could probably only afford to keep two. If I could lease out one, then I could probably keep three.

Well selling the first mare is for sure out of the question.

I'd love to keep the andalusian, I feel like I've put so much work into him, and now I can finally start riding him BUT, My goals are with barrel racing and well racing on an andalusian? LOL, no.

As far as the mare/foal. I originally bought the mare with the intentions of keeping her and selling the foal. But then I have in the back of my mind-if she was started on barrels-but traded for a broodie, is that something to consider? She has no lameness issues or anything like that.

With the filly I could have a fresh start and really raise/train my own, but do I want to wait all over again like I did with the Andalusian? She is the sweetest filly and of course I got attached to her. UGH

as far as the other 3 go I really dont have any favorites.

Hop on horse number three and see how she rides through the pattern.Shes only 8,so it would be a keeper if she doesn't act crazy. If she does ok I would sell number 2,and the baby.

Lease Horse #1 Sell #2 and #4. Since you want to focus on Barrels, the Andalusian does not fit and he is a "project/hobby type of horse", the filly will require many years of waiting, expense, training and hoping that she does not get hurt to go into training, but she has good breeding, let someone else invest the time and money into her for now. This will allow you to regroup and get back on your feet.

I am glad you are out of a bad relationship, that in itself is a HUGE relief.

I helped a friend out one time when she got a divorce and she was selling almost everything. She had a filly that was bout a year old she didn't want to let go so she asked if we can be partners on her. I took her to my house and fed her and took care of her. A year or a little more than a year she was back on her feet and I just gave her horse back to her and told her we wasn't partners and that I was glad to help out. Maybe you could find someone that would want to be partners on your babies and setup like we did. Tho I know it could be a bad deal. and not everyone is not so greedy .But a thought. I wish I could do the same for you :))

My aunt had actually agreed to take on the mare and filly for a little while at her place. She lives about 2 hours south of me, but at least I can visit on the weekends. I only have to pay for their feed so at least that will help for a bit, but it's not a lifetime option.

Otherwise, that would totally be a dream!

I have actually thought about this as well!  I just hate to think about going through the process all over again. It would be awesome if I could find someone who would want to trade for maybe the mare and filly. That could be nice!

The thought of selling them haunts me. Just wondering what happens to them 5-10 years from now. Especially knowing how sweet they all are. UGH lol

Is #1 a barrel horse? Why lease her out if you can use her?  (I would not lease out  a horse.I agree with veintiocho... sell all the others. It costs too much to raise a baby when you consider boarding bills. She will (probably) be at least 5 before she is earning her keep. That's 60 mo. of boarding + training + etc.= lots of $ you could put in savings and buy something later.
Also, I would not enter into any arrangements that require you put your horses into the care of others, or that requires that you depend on someone else, or that causes you to become indebted to others. Just my .02

#1 used to be my barrel horse. Shes 17 now, we had some lameness issues-abcessing-but I finally got it under control so she has been pretty good recently. If I did end up leasing her it would be to a kid taking lessons from the barn manager. Nothing to crazy and I would still be able to see her and watch over everything.

I agree, I hate to have them under someone elses care. But 1st of the month is coming up and I just can't afford $1500 month in board. My aunt has no problem looking after them, I just need to provide feed. It would only be short term until I can get the money situation under control/get one or more sold.

I'm glad to hear that you are safe now, good for you.  That was not easy.
If the mare is starting her barrel life you can start your new life with her.  She is not that old. You have the option of breeding her down the road if you want a foal to start.
Wish you were closer I love 2 and 4.

#3 is super cute and looks really sweet!!  Are you confident she's 100% sound and wasn't turned into a broodmare because of lameness issues?  If she's sound, keep her and try her. Sell the baby and the andulsian- there's lots of Andulusian's for sale on craigslist when you are ready to buy one again:

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!! I agree with most everything. I think the best bet would be to sell the andalusian and baby, keep the mare and see how she does & if I don't end up liking her, I can always move on from there.  That will be my plan!

This.

If your goals are to barrel race, then set yourself up for those goals. Lease out your old gal (or ride her yourself) and ride horse #3.

#2 is not suitable for barrel racing and #4 isn't going to be ready for a loooong time.
