Location: Texas | I need some ideas/advice on some possible career change options. I currently teach school, this is my 11th year, but as we all know education isn't what it used to be and it's not the best career to be in right now. I got into teaching to make a difference and help students, but with pressure for test scores, lack of support from admin, etc it's hard to accomplish that. I also time rodeos, secretary large barrel races, etc so I'm extremely busy outside of school as well. I'm looking for possibly a flexible career and if it were horse/rodeo related even better. I've considered real estate, but know nothing about that. Anyone have any good ideas or directions to go? I have a bachelor's degree. I am not really looking for any of the pyramid type companies. Thanks for any ideas/input. |

| Real estate is going to keep you busy on the weekends. My daughter is a drug rep, she was an excellent college student, 4.0, degree an economics, got her MBA. They don’t look for any specific degree,just high achieving and out going. This is her second year, she makes around 85k with bonuses and perks. Very flexible hours. |

Location: Bastrop, Texas | I've always realized that teaching isn't paid real well, but I still think it has advantages, or maybe I should say potential advantages......summers off, weekends off, holidays off, good benefits and good pension. I would think that a young married couple could have a decent combined income with a lot of time off plus retirement security, job security, and healthcare.
I guess it's natural to look elsewhere.....the grass is greener sorta thing - perhaps. |

I have many teacher friends that have been teaching for 20+ years. Most feel that all the changes, political correctness, etc. these last few years have made teaching miserable.
to the OP she called some head hunters and had them set up interviews. |

| Well, I had a first today. This year is 42 for me. I emailed a parent last week. Mom came to school today and junior was asleep. Cut to the chase. He called his mother a stupid old MF'er right in front of me. Personally, I think a baseball bat across the mouth would be better than licks. I told a teacher down the hall it might be a good thing that I don't have kids. She was laughing when I walked out. Right now the deal is that he cannot come back to my class unless he apologizes to his mother in front of me.
Just a heads up for you young girls on here, take a look at how your boyfriend treats his mother because it is a pretty good indication of how he will treat you. |

This makes me sick! My dad was a principal for over 35 years, so I've seen a lot too. I'd have to say, in this case, MOM is at fault here. She raised him to be this disrespectful to her. My God, my mom would have launched me across the room (and rightly so).
I don't know how you teachers do it, I'm afraid I'd be in jail! |

Poor little guy needs his butt tore up so it hurts too badly for him to SIT!! I could not be a teacher.....would have charges brought against me!! |

I am a teacher/school admin in my 10th year. I guess I disagree with your stance, a little bit. Have you considered finding a position in a different school or different district? It is very much about the kids where I work, admin support is totally there, and we have a great balance. Don't let a bad environment sour your passion. |

I wish it were just that easy and the benefits that you mentioned made it the ideal career. It's not easy by any means and if it weren't for SOME time off, by the time we do inservice, we don't get much of a summer anyway, it wouldn't be worth it at all. I'm not looking for the grass is greener type of situation. I'm seriously trying to lessen my stress so that I can enjoy life. I spend HOURS on hours doing paperwork, grading, analyzing data for 'betterment' of test scores, lesson plans, etc and it's not a cake walk. I obviously got into it to make a difference in the lives of kids, it's not for the money or for the benefits. Sorry if my post mislead you to think that I'm looking for a grass is greener type of job. I work really hard not only at school but also in my side jobs. I travel back and forth to rodeos and then teach the next day and go back to finish the rodeo so I'm not wanting an easy out or anything like that. |

Location: East Texas | To make what most teachers make, there are hundreds of jobs that require little to no certification or training that can do that. Just pick one you like and get after it. I was where you were at last year and changed subject areas and it has been an awesome change.
I teach in TX and there are good and bad at every school/job. If the bad outweighs the good in you opinion, definitely find something else.
Heck, I know someone that made $20K in a week selling lemonade. Go find what will make ya happy.

| Have you considered online teaching? I have a cousin and a couple friends that are online teachers and love it. They are all through private school systems that people have to pay tuition for so although they still get some questionable parents and students most of them are more motivated than the kids they were getting in the public school system. They can do it anywhere they can get an internet connection which might be great for you because you could get a hot spot and work from the rodeo grounds. They said it takes some getting used to but they have all said they like it way better. |

His mother said nothing to him. I assume this is common at home!?!? I made him apologize to his mother in front of me and wrote out a discipline report. Just sad.
I told the Assistant Principal that i could be a zoo keeper or a teacher but not both and I had thought they had hired me as a teacher. He did agree.

I get week off at thanksgiving, 3 weeks off for winter break, one week in February, and 2 weeks for spring break. We are done with school by the first week in June. My district pays us 12 months so we don't have to worry about pay checks over summer. If I decide to do supervision at football games, plays, other sports etc, I am paid at 56.00/hr with a 4 hour minimum even if the event ends early.. Our SUBS in this district ( With only a bachelors) get 175.00/Day. I'm not going anywhere. |

We are done with school by the first week in June. My district pays us 12 months so we don't have to worry about pay checks over summer. If I decide to do supervision at football games, plays, other sports etc, I am paid at 56.00/hr with a 4 hour minimum even if the event ends early.. Our SUBS in this district ( With only a bachelors) get 175.00/Day. I'm not going anywhere. Wow! That is 3 times what I make a year. I wouldn't be going anywhere either. Plus we don't have near the time off you have. I work 187 contracted days during the school year, have additional time through the two months off we have in the summer, we only get three days at Thanksgiving, two weeks at Christmas, one week for Spring Break and maybe one day off a month in the Spring, if we don't use the days for bad weather. We are required to supervise events for free, no additional pay. Oh and I pay $700 a month for health insurance, pay for dental/eye insurance.

We are contracted to 181 days a year but we start the first week of August and end the First week of June so thats how we get the time off. I'm in southern calif so no weather days for us. lol We are required to work ONE free supervision and every one is paid after that. I can't imagine your 700 a month for health insurance!!! Maybe the cost of living being greater here is why we are paid more who knows.. |

Location: Texas | If I were to change careers I would become a drug rep too. Hours are good, no call, you get most weekends... you get to take people to lunch, and doctors/vets have to buy their product somewhere. My job definitely isn't flexible. and people can sure be rude. |

I teach in Sunny Southern California. Cost of living is def higher here. My friends in TX tell me that I could sell my small ranch here and buy a big ranch in TX! Lol |

| On the lighter side, one of my ex-students was at a faculty meeting this year. He is a coach. I said you must not have heard my DON'T BE A TEACHER SPEACH. He laughed. |
