My brain is flowing with research and information!

how do you choose the stallion?

I know what traits I'm looking for. and obviously If my budget was unlimited it would make it so much easier to choose lol

obviously equi stats has the "magic cross's" well I could breed to a magic cross, but theres alot of them out there,
and I want to get the most out of the linage as I can

so the frenchman guys, are you better off to breed to sons of frenchman guy, or breed to sun frost sons? dash ta fame sons or first down dash sons? obviously mare power is important.

my mare for example, I need more speed and stride and she is proven herself, but I want to make sure im choosing the right stud for her!

how do you choose! lol

theres alot of nice studs out there with some nice mare power backing them! but what im having trouble deciding is the paternal side, will I have a better chance of getting the speed im looking for going back a generation or two ? or go with the trends that are happening right now?

I'd say if you're wanting to add speed and stride, find a stud that has strong running lines on both sides. If I had a mare that was running well and just needed a little speed, I'd go with DTF lines, mixed with something mid range for speed. So say find a son of DTF that has a mid range run on the maternal side. DTF I think is a lot of run and a lot of heart and I wouldn't personally want to cross DTF with a super run-bred mare, unless you want a horse with unlimited run. I personally like Feel The Sting, I'm thinking of crossing to him on my mare when she's older if she proves herself. We all know Stingray's lines, she's got the heart and run to hold her own, but she's also very level headed and so so consistent. When Iw atch him run I like what I see and he's very reasonable right now. I'm not sure what your mare is bred like though.

Thank you for your reply!
my mare is all cowbred! so the more run I can get the better!
so I was researching, and one of the magic running lines is the Dash Ta Fame/Lanes Leinster

theres alot of dash ta fames to choose from! just how do you pick the right one!

I have heard from a lot of people that it's best to breed a running mare to the FG/Sun Frost lines, as it will give them some pep in their step, and keep them from being too lazy. That being said, I understand that's not always the case, and there are probably some great FG/Sun Frost x cowbred mare crosses out there.

Personally (and my opinions are mine alone), I feel that the market is becoming saturated with such intricate and specialized crosses, there are so many nice mares and studs out there- why not widen the gene pool instead of breeding and re-breeding to only one or two lines? I am not saying don't breed to sons of DTF and FG, I am just saying there are other Sun Frost and FDD sons that are great horses, but might not be as famous, and could have a completely different maternal line that could be of great benefit to some breeding programs.

My mare is all cowbred/reining - older cow breeding(two eyed jack/ zans par barr). she was a tough and honest horse back in her day, very quick turns, just lacked the speed and stride in between.

I like pep, I dont mind a hotter cross, personally I prefer it

Oh i agree! how do you choose to go with the older lines that sired the trends or stick with the trends? where does the proven producers come from in a pedigree? the product itself (dash ta fame/frenchman guy ect) or farther back in the pedigree?

I have noticed the more specialized and "inbred" (although people don't call it that anymore) horses get, the more inheritable issues (lordosis, club feet, parrot mouths, etc) start to crop up.

I would start thinking about what maternal lines you like- you already brought up the DTF x Lanes Leinster "magic cross". She's Three Bars/Skipper W/double bred Depth Charge on the bottom, and TB on the top. If you like her, you could shop around and see if there are any sons of FDD with similar maternal lines.

I say buck the trends and start a new one! They all had to have a beginning somewhere

The Sun Frost/FG needing crossed on speed lines is a myth that has been repeated so many times on the internet that people start to take it as fact. In my experience, most Sun Frost horses can fly---I am not talking AAA running speed on the track but in the arena they can stop and get back to top speed in a hurry.

the majority of my crosses have all been stallions by a First Down Dash son, I love him hes my holy grail of everything important lol.
I have breed to sons of Dash Ta Fame with very diffrent bottom sides, but one of the coolest was by Dashing Cleat, And the best mare I ever owned was by TR Dasher, whom I NEED to find and breed to. I was telling a friend that and it she had no Idea who TR Dasher was "im not familar with that FDD Son" LOL ... that Dam Dash Ta Fame is always steeling the other FDD sons thunder LOL.
And I dont really like sun frost so that doesent matter for me (Flame suit ZIPPEEEDDDDD)

But gosh darn there are so many DTF sons standing, its almost overwhelming when stallion searching, and if they are not a son they are out of a daughter it seems.

Ah, I am right there with you with a flame suit zipped in regards to certain horses and bloodlines. My opinions are always mine alone (okay, they’re usually my husbands’ too), but some people take them as fighting words

Isn't it always such a shocking moment when you are talking about a stallion and the other person DOESN’T KNOW THEM?! I am always like “well let me just show you this handsome hunk!”

There are so many talented, gorgeous, well-bred studs (and mares!) out there... It’s just a matter of researching and finding what you want and making sure it works for you. I have already planned “wishful weekend trips” to see the four legged baby daddies I haven’t met yet
