Why was 5star a bust??? I know you're asking about pads but has he been checked over or xrayed for KS?(KISSING SPINE)? |

| I've always had good luck with SaddleRight pads. I have a big shouldered, high withered mare and got a 5 Star with the flex fit option and it just didn't like it. To me, and I'm not hating on all those die hard 5 Star lovers out there, they're just too soft and don't offer much protection or support. I ended up buying another SaddleRight and it works great on my high withered mare because it offers wither and spine relief. I went through 4 pads when I got my new, custom fitted saddle and landed on the SaddleRight! |

I have a shark fin. He was 20 in this pic, but he's been like this all his life.
I've tried over 60 saddles and 20 different pads...
I read a book that showed how most wither cutout pads are insufficient. They showed how to cut a pad to not press on the top of the spine above the shoulder - so I have a wool pad that I took a box cutter to and I put a 3/8 "thinline pad over that.
I cut a slit along the top fold of the pad (marked at the vertical line) and cut all the way to the front edge of the pad.
No contoured, cutout pad works for him. They do not make the wither cutout long enough for horses....and I've seen horses get rub/white spots from the edges of the cutouts. I have had Saddleright pads 2 different times, but the slit at the top of those are not long enough and pressed into his spine.

Im really going to lean towards saddle fit issues. I know, everyone hates to hear that. But with so many pads not working and saddles being the most obvious reason for back soreness. But if that isn't it, rule out any other soreness-and not just the spine as you have done. Audie has been sore in his back because of a sore front foot (and now he has high/low we have to deal with), he has had it because of a neck muscle issue and hocks/stifles and SI can cause it. Pretty much anything can cause it.
On the 5 stars, when my husband was riding 10-12 hr days in 90+ heat day working on local ranches back in the day, we were soring up everything. Too often it was impossible to ride back to the trailer and swap horses in the afternoons. So I decided to spend the money on a couple of 5 star pads. We have never looked back. They breathe better than anything else out there and we have literally tried them all. They hold their form and as long as you get the proper thickness have fit under all our different saddes. |

as much as I love BOT stuff, I would be afraid this combination would create a lot of heat, but have never tried it so no personal experience |

It's the only set up I use all year long. Even in the Tx heat. Yes he sweats when it is hot outside, but when it is 60's or below he is dry when I take the saddle off. But of course its all personal preference. |

You would think so, but I live in South Texas. I don’t ride in the heat of the day, but when I ride it is still over 95 and well over 50% humidity and his back has never been scalded or overheated. I do have to wash my liner once a week and I do ride him for 1 1/2 hours or more. I wouldn’t use if I was going to work cattle all day. |
