I use my running martingale on a lot of bits that don't have shanks but I have seen other trainers use a running martingale with a shanked bit. As a disclaimer these trainers are not running through the barrel pattern with the running martingale and shanked bit together. Now I've never been told not to use a shanked bit with running martingale but I feel like it gets looked down upon. What is it like for you as a trainer or where you live?

I've used my running martingale with a jr cowhorse bit...never had an issue. Same as what you are saying, I'll use it for practice and warm up, but take off the martingale for a run. I haven't noticed that it takes away from the shank at all. I pretty much always have a running martingale on at home =] Edited to add: Most of mine are ridden in snaffles or chains though.
