Just wanted to tell some one what I did and results. My retired mare cribs awful, tried several things including alfalfa pellets without.much luck. But last week I tried something a little.different I gave my guys soaked alfalfa pellets soaked all the water I could get into them. Sitting 3 days while.she is not completely stopped she no long gulped her food only to grab wood. I don't know what difference wetting the pellets makes but on her it sure did.
I have one that does it too. I think her issue is pain. She has a needle tip broke off in her coffin joint that we can't get to. Anyways, before knowing all this I dewormed her, treated her for ulcers and took her off processed bagged feed. It all seemed to help but the biggest difference I saw was when I gave her soaked alfalfa pellets am and pm. Her foot seems to be bothering her less, the vet and I are hoping it is fusing and will soon be pain free. I still notice her crib in pasture here and there.
I have used chopped alfalfa and pellets but not wet them. Made a huge difference in 2 days. I will see what happens. Tonight while my guys where up with no feed while I rode my mare the old mare cribbed about 10percent of what she used to, as is almost she does not get the same thrill as she did before alfalfa pellets. Just can't believe something so simple big results. The thing I know if this makes her belly feel good I know what it will do to the others.
