Location: Texas | I am asking y'all because I know you know a little bit about everything. There are 3 major DNA testing providers. Ancestry, 23 and Me and one more that I cannot think of the name. I saw a thing on TV where they tested them and basically the info was accurate for all 3. Now my question. Do they maintain separate data bases if you are looking for possible family matches? |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | I'm not sure but I am going to make my husband do it. His Great grandma has a lot of pictures of her on the reservation and I traced that same part of his family to a rez in Oklahoma. I can't remember what one though. He swears he doesn't have any native in him but I don't believe it. |

Location: Texas | I have a half sister that our mother has never shared ANY information about her father. My mother is 92 and my sister won't ask her for fear of upsetting her. My mother's parents were from Mexico but she has always said that her mother's (my grandmother) family was from Spain. She is more light skinned than alot of Mexican people but who knows. My sisters and I would like her to take the genetic test and my older sister would like to find out something about her paternal family. |

I think that would be a good idea. I know nothing about my mom. I have a 1/2 sis-same mom that I just started to connect with on Facebook, but she hasn't pushed the "mom issue." I have been able to trace a lot on ancestry.com though. That's tough for your sister not knowing any names. |

Location: Slipping down the slope of old age. Boo hoo. | Earlier this year I did Ancestry. All my life I had been told stories of our Cherokee ancestor -- it was legend. So much so my mom and her sister attended the Cherokee Pow-Wow. Well - my results arrived. There is NO Native American. I am of 100% European ancestry (67% British, then Irish, Finnish, etc.). Wow. It was fun to find out, but it sure did flip out my mom and aunt. I told them that all those paper trail records they have are just that -- paper. No one ever writes down the affairs, mistresses.... the children who had babies and had those babies raised as their sibling -- blood will tell though.... It was fun to have this done and some relatives (rather close) have reached out via Ancestry (it's all confidential so you only get in touch if you wish to do so). |

You most cerainly must not be adopted.
Those of us over the age of 40, and maybe many younger, who were adopted have a plethora of reasons to want to find our genetic relatives.
I doubt the gubment has the funding just yet for tracking DNA to any effect. Maybe in another 25 years or 50 years. Current human DNA testing, on the scale that Ancestry, Family Tree, or 23 and Me perform, is about as specific as the DNA testing that AQHA performs. General family lines, mitochondrial DNA lines, and not a whole lot deeper or wide spectrum. |

I keep telling people that if you do genealogy you have to have documentation. A pedigree is meaningless. In 1912, a law was passed that required a birth certificate to be issued and a death certificate so for at least several generations there is legal evidence for a relationship.
My mother in law told me that her grandmother was born immediately after they arrived in Texas. Wrong. Church records show grandma was born several years after they arrived. If you dig for the information you need it really is very interesting. Family stories are cool but many times are kind of incorrect. |

If he has his grandma's name and birthdate, along with her parents names, he might be able to see if her name is on the original enrollment records. |

| After sending in your DNA, you will be able to view all who match your DNA. It's broken down. You have to do some studying to understand. It's really interesting. This was with Ancestry.

Location: Texas | I found a cousin on Ancestry DNA. She had been looking for her birth parents. I made a few phone calls and found her birth mom. She'd been told she was a child of immigrants..... no, she is a child of the American Revolution. |

I'm not an overly paranoid person, but this is the EXACT reason I've quenched my curiosity. I looked on 23 and Me to learn more. It SAYS it's confidential, but they still have your name, address and DNA. I'd love to learn more about my history and health background (especially because both of my parents died young of natural causes, BUT I haven't because Uncle Sam already knows more than he needs to know. If they are checking my text messages, I am sure they'd like to see my naked chromosomes. |

Or get blanket search warrants to access the data bank.

I wonder how accurate this testing really is. There were two identical twins who sent samples in and both came back very different on their ancestry, so always suspect on some of this stuff but who knows. |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | Pretty sure the government can find you if you already pay taxes, have a cell phone, ever filled out a census. Until those asshats try and put a chip under my skin I will sleep just fine.
My husband and his mom and grandpa all have the same look with high cheek bones and dark hair. That is where the native resemblence ends honestly (oh and the husband can't grow much of a beard. It comes in all white trashy lol). He wants the test to say it isn't true, but I am about 80% sure it is. Just too many things add up. His great grandma left his grandpa a box of items that after his death was passed down to my husband. It had real beaded moccasins, some pipe thing. Probably stuff a museum would want lol. |

I would think that they all have separate data bases because each company uses a different set of DNA markers. |
