I am putting in a new kitchen and will be getting a farmhouse style sink, just not sure if I want to go with a fireclay or copper sink – what do you have and would you do it again? The fireclay looks a little hardier, but I think the color of the copper would fit better..

Also, what kind of countertops do you have?

The overall house look is rustic/cabin like if that helps!

I have a copper sink in the bathroom...it always looks dirty, every little bit of soap scum or toothpaste that doesn’t get rinsed cleanly shows on it. Just a thought. I thought I wanted copper in my kitchen too until we put it in the bathroom. Maybe other finishes are different.

I have no experience with fire clay?

We went with a low profile stainless steel single basin and skipped the apron front. I love it.

We went with laminate countertops this time around. The cabinets were salvaged and I painted them and while they look good now, they’re either going to look okay in 5 years or look like crap and we’ll invest the money in redoing all the cabinets and then going with a higher end countertop.

I have a cast iron apron sink covered in white enamel. It is made by Kohler. Love it. I do have to wipe it down after use to keep it looking white--but it is not any more maintenance that a white bathroom sink. I use the norwex cleaning paste when I want to give it a good cleaning.

Copper looks ugly after a while.  Unless you have the time to clean it, other then just wiping it down.  I like the cast iron Kohler farm front.  Works great for us.

Oh yes, I forgot about the cast iron. I liked that one too. How does the finish hold up to scratches/dropped pots?

How is the butcher block holding up? I really REALLY want them, but not sure if I'd end up ruining them if water was left on the counter! Can you tell me what they cost you?

I love my butcher block! The great thing is, once the get scuffed, scratched, and stained up, I can hit them with a sander and reseal them. They will be like brand new! So far no flaws with them though. We bought them at a local discount store. They come in 10ft sticks and I had to buy two. $156 each plus tax. Then I had hubby install. I sealed them myself with Waterlox original sealer. I think the can was $46 plus tax from Amazon.

I thought I wanted a copper sink as well when we were building, the more I read on them is they do not stay the same color. Some like the shiny copper, some like the dull worn out look, you get both eventually. I opted for an undermount stainless and love it. I went with a full sink in the kitchen and a double in the mud room. I like my one big sink and wish it was in the mud room at times, but handy to have that divided smaller sink a lot of the time.

I have a copper sink in my bathroom and agree it looks dirty more often than not.  I am getting ready to finish my kitchen and have been considering soapstone as I really like the look of concrete farmhouse sinks.  I was looking at the native trails sinks that look like concrete but have been scared away by many negative reviews.

Had a copper sink in my old barn apartment. Pretty when clean but always looks dirty. Hated cleaning that thing all the time!

Not well! My parents have a white one about 10 year old and it’s stained to no end. It also had a big chip come off on the side we don’t even use much and yes they scratch. They are replacing it with stainless steel. I really think it’s the only way to go in the kitchen. I think I will latch on to the old one for a utility sink tho!

My trailer has a copper sink and I hate it. It’s a pain to deal with just staying for a weekend- there’s no way I would want it in my house!

Copper sinks really always look dirty, I had one, and I never liked it. Of course, there are some good cleaners which can keep your sink always perfect, but no everyone knows about them. Here is a nice article about the best kitchen cabinet cleaner, I read it, and chose nice cleaners for my kitchen due to the surface, and got the information about useful tips for keeping the kitchen clean.

We just put in a fireclay sink a couple of months ago and really like it so far! Ours came with grates in the bottom to protect it. I don't think we HAVE to have them in there but I would rather drop something and the grate catch it than the bottom of the sink.

I have butcher block and it does not wear the best.

Had a copper sink once.  It was impossible to clean.  It looked cool when we first installed but it turned green and brown.   Would not get on again.

I would never get copper, I have a lot of copper stuff.  It is horrible to keep looking good, I have been known to clean and spray with polyurathane, not worth much as antiques anyway,  I have a granite countertop and a composite granite black Blanco sink.  I love both, I don't exactly know what fire clay is.

I can't decide if I love or hate my dark countertops, very hard to see how dirty it is. I love the black sink (which I never thought I would husband picked both) the countertop is beautiful and so far granite is my favorite.  I had butcher block before, not a fan.

Have fun, I love remodeling & building, helps that husband is very handy.

ETA:  I would love the sink with removable center.  I didn't get a farm house sink and don't regret it at all, because mine is really deep.  I would think with a FHS you would need so much water to wash anything.  Just wondering if everyone is happy with their decision to get one.  My DIL is very happy with hers.

Copper is beautiful, until it's not! I have copper sinks in my LQ and they are so incredibly difficult to keep clean or keep from turning green. I would love a copper kitchen sink but it's not realistic for me.

We are in the process of building and if you are on Facebook, the group "Modern Farmhouse Design & Decor Ideas" is awesome for tips/advice/opinions.

Gail I would be glad to show you pictures, however that resizing thing would require way to much work right now.  Maybe next week.  I'm leaving in the morning to go camping and trail riding in the mountains of E TN.  May need a little luck I have a new horse and he's a little spooky at times.  I shouldn't even be on here have way to much I should be doing.

When we built our new house in 2018. I had wanted a farm sick but then got a really good deal on a black sink. I ended up being very glad I hadn't gotten a farm sink, because we were in Ft Scott KS and found a antique counter, it was a counter out of the historic Ft Scott Boot store that was down by the railroad tracks many many years ago. We used it for our kitchen cabnet where the sink goes. If I had got a farmsink we would have had to of cut down in the front of the counter & I wouldn't have wanted to of done that. The black sink worked perfect. The only problem with the black sink is we have hard water so it spots really bad. I just always wipe it out with a towel when I'm done with it.
