I am looking for a 2018 stud for my mare and wanting some suggestions on what would cross well with her. I have some ideas, but want to hear some outside ideas too.

I have a 2 yo colt by Firewater Finale from her and he is very nice. He may be a possibility again.
Resulting foal would be intended for barrels and roping.

Wanting to keep the stud fee around $1000
Nothing by ASOF as the mare already has enough length to her body.

Sorry, I couldn’t get her added to the database but here is her side:

Merry For Corona (Corona Cartel x Merry For Money by Dash For Cash) has caught my eye recently. He’s coming 7, and his first foal crop was born in 2017. He’s pretty short backed, and overall I like the looks of him. He’s listed here on BHW, and his stud fee is $850.

I've met him before, he has the best disposition. Very quiet and easy going. Very correct. But I don't know of too many CC that have done very well in the arena, roping or barrels.

Rosas Cantina CC has won the most money (futurity, WPRA, the American, etc.) that I am aware of, but you’re right- as many foals that are out there, you don’t see them consistently winning big in the rodeo arena. Lisa Lockhart talked about how Rosa was pretty quirky and it took a bit for them to click, but she was the sweetest horse ever.

I would be willing to take the risk on breeding my The Continental mare to MFC, because I think that horse would be one heckuva athlete!

Rosas Cantina has an exceptionally strong maternal side. There has been a few others as well. For the right price, I would consider it.

Thanks for the suggestions! What are the minds of the CC like? The mare is kind of on the hot side and has a lot of run, and while I like them on the hotter side, I don't want a brainless runner...

Whiteboy do you have any suggestions? This is the mare I'd possibly cross on one of Hunts studs if they are available..

I ride a CC son and he is the type of horse you can not ride for a few months; throw a saddle on and its like he hasn't missed a single day. The problem with that is....if I make a mistake then I have to fix that mistake every time I ride him. I love him to death but IMO the are not for beginners at all in that are, however they are very docile and want to please. I let my children walk him around the barrel races even though he's a stud....very mild mannered. But like I said, like Elephants..once something is learned, then good luck trying to fix it. Probably why you don't see many in the 1D circuit.

He is a nice 1D horse but if I'm not 100% the same every run then I get the middle finger and he won't work for me.

I'd just look at some of the stallion auctions. Lots of good ones going on now.

I'd second Silver Winds of the West.
I'd stay away from CC if your mare is hot. As far as I know they are better crossed on cow/good-minded/not hot mares.

The Texas Quarter Horse Association has a stallion auction going on right now as well. Some of the stallions are listed in more than one, so you could place your bids and see if you get one cheaper.

The Kandyman is super neat. Out of the winningest futurity mare of all time (at least that is what the ad says), plus she has several out there winning-over $200,000 so far. So he has the breeding to be a sire (Tres Seis x Famous Silk Panties by Dash Ta Fame). I'm taking my favorite Ivory James mare to him.

Otherwise I am a huge fan of Firewater Finale. I have a 5 yr old that I LOVE... and I have to throw a vote in for Guys Piece Ofthe Pie, his babies are doing amazing. The ones entered in the futurities are picking up 1D checks and winning the open 1D's all over the CO/WY/SD area. He's also paid into Future Fortunes, 5 State, VGBRA & Cowboy State Incentive. His fee is only $1000 and they ship for $225/$250-pretty much at cost. His babies sell well-he is a Futurity/Derby/Slot Race/Open 1D/Rodeo money earner himself.

Most ppl can't afford direct offspring of CC is why he is not in the arena, yet.

But sons and daughters of his are certainly producing winners in the arena, again when affordable. PYC's are really a hot ticket right now when barrel racers can get their hands on them as well as Ivory James offspring. Your just not seeing own sons or daughters because when they are affordable they are someone what older OTT with a ton of outs and probably have issues.

I do really like The Kandyman! He's been one of my top picks and I'm going to see if I can't get him a little cheaper on one of the auctions this year. Guys Piece ofthe Pie is nice too, he might be an option as well. I am hoping to futurity this colt and like you said his colts are doing well.

I really like my Dazzler colt, but he is super accident prone. He had to have surgery at 3mo, again spring 2017 for a stick he stuck up up next to his man parts, choked the day I brought him in from the pasture to start training, and this winter had ice balls under his feet and came in too hot and slid into/under the fence. Just yesterday I was chopping and throwing ice out with a pitch fork and didn't see him come up behind me and he got hit in the head with a block of ice. I don't think it is maternally or paternally related, but I do feel he is jinxed..

Ha mine is too, that is how he made it so long with man parts. I loved him from the start but didn't want a stallion around anymore after we put down our last one. But I was going to be danged to have a gorgous crippled gelding in my pasture! He started off by trying to tear out his chest, 2 days after doing that he injured his hind end/back. We treated it as a pelvic injury-6 months of small pen/stall rest.  So far so good. He gets ridden hard around the ranch and has covered a handful of mares with no soreness. Is started on the barrels and poles too.

Your not going to see high numbers because they haven't been that many tried in barrels.

CC is not a sire like DTF or of FS or these others where the fee was reasonable.

The earnings for a PYC right now are pretty good to where I'd dang sure gamble on them being a contender. Not to mention greats like Promise me a Wagon....given the dam was Pie Sky Promises. The full sibling Pale Face Wagon hasn't been as successful but still a contender.

Ivory James definitely has decent earnings in the barrel industry, to be a race horse sire.

I honestly can't name off the top of my head a Corona Cartel stud marketed towards barrel racers that I like on the bottom, but the ones mentioned definitely have equistat earnings that warrant being bred to if you can afford.

They just don't get in as many hands. Remember before Tres Seis hit big in the race world he was marketed at a cheaper fee to barrel horse and performance homes....CC never did that...never had to.

Can you pull just barrel/roping reports on equistat? I don't ever mess with that so have no idea. Do you have the stats on PYC and Ivory James just for barrels/rope? If so would you post them it would be so interesting to see!

I have to agree with this. They never were affordable enough to get the interest in the arena, the race people are more than happy to keep IJ and so many other CC studs breeding track mares. DTF wasn't always so dang high, he had plenty of UT girls to make him famous before that price jumped. IJ and PYC have been pretty high as long as I can remember. If IJ stud fee were more in that $2000-$2500 range I would take a gamble on another one. But at $4000 I am more worried the foal will break a leg at a week old and I just won't invest that much. PYC is too high for me to even care what it is anymore.

Best Advice is a CC son and most of his colts have gone to the race track. But this year we had one, Jezabells Hot Advice, hit the barrel pen (who had run on the track previously) and she was a futurity winner, stayed consistently in the 1D all year and won an open events with 300+ entries. And she is ridden by a youth rider. We have one coming up for next year, and a couple others to start. They are proving to have great minds.

madredepeanut - 2018-01-10 9:35 AM Merry For Corona (Corona Cartel x Merry For Money by Dash For Cash) has caught my eye recently.
You aren't really seeing grandsons/granddaughters either.  I pulled the equistat reports...they just arent producing like everyone wishes they were.

We are contemplating breeding our Big Brown daughter to IJ in a couple years, but we would pursue racing the foal on the track once it's old enough, then hopefully start it on the barrels after its racing career. I have to agree, some of those stud fees are just too high to have the horse "only be a barrel horse", if that makes sense. That is a lot of money one would have to try and recoup somehow, so people are steering those foals to where they can profit the most- the track vs the arena. That is a HUGE risk to invest in, I agree.
