| So I normally ride colts and train my own, I had nothing ready to run until next year so i bought a finished horse to play.
Tried her out and it was a perfect fit! So much so I felt ready to enter the day she came home! Once home not so much. I have ran at 3 races and have not had a clean run yet! I have had her 2.5 months now. Frustrated is a understatement. Oh and it is never been the same barrel.
Are just not clicking? |

| It can take awhile... Ive had my gelding 2 years and in the last 6-8 months we've really gotten together. Riding him at home really helps, just riding in general getting a good feel for him. Trial and error!

Location: South Georgia | I'm slow to warm up and trust. It took me several months. I never understood how someone could try a horse at a race. I'd never have enough trust to do that. |

| I would say anywhere from a few months to even up to a year. My best advice would be to ride as much as possible, even every single day if you can and I don't necessarily mean on the pattern. Learn to understand that horse like it's the back of your hand.
Sounds like you need to develop a feel for her, rather than expecting her to conform to you.

| I think it can certainly take 6+ months easily and agree with others to ride ride ride her.
However, also suggest getting in contact with the seller and seeing what mistakes you might be making. |

| It takes me a good year. I am so scared to trust. I have two “babysitters” (one is 4 yrs old but feels so so safe) and I still hold them both back. I’ve owned both for 1+ year. But for me, I know I’ll have them both for a very long time and I’m not out to win, so I’m taking my time. I do better when I have someone telling me to let them go, trust them, push them, etc.... |

Location: Jersey Girl | It takes about a year to form a good working partnership with a horse in general IMO. I agree with the others, ride as much as you can doing all sorts of things, not just on the pattern.
Now as for clicking on the pattern only I think that varies depending on the rider and the horse. |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | It can take you from 6 months to a year maybe more are less, lots and lots of riding like trail riding, take your horse to a playday or a team penning get to know your horse, take barrels slow and easy, if you feel like you need to do barrels just go exhibition in low gear for a while like a few months untill you can start getting use to your new buddy. And yes sometimes it dont work out |

Location: Dearing, GA | I agree with what everyone else has said- give it more time! I'm timid on new horses, and I found that forcing myself to hop on bareback for at least 15 minutes every day, just at a walk in the round pen, really helps build my confidence and develop trust with a new horse. |

Location: Cocoa, Florida | I know some trainers who only give them a few months or that know right away, I always stray away from a style that’s harder to ride, for me I like a smooth turning horse that follows their nose, has a little more bend then a square and snappy one. After finding the right style it can take up to a year or more to get with them, I’ve never bought a finished horse so I’ve bonded quicker since I’ve had to make my own but I would give it Time, looking back I feel like I’ve given up earlie and sold some nice horses I should have kept. |

Location: Texas | It took me almost a year. I only got to ride him 9 months out of the 12 but toward the end of last year I finally started trusting him and now we are getting better and better. It was frustrating because I bought a horse with a big record and I almost gave up. I really loved my horse and was determined. So if you like the horse and just having trouble with your runs give it some time. The biggest thing that helped me was locating the girl that trained him. She was able to tell me a lot about his past and what to do. We’ve been clocking ever since. |

Location: Texas | it depends on the horse and rider combination. My sister is slower to get with a horse. Her best horse she ever ran, they hit barrels i think the first 10 runs in a row. My mom was sure I made a bad call on buying the mare. Then everything clicked and they won a ton together. She was a push style, whip and hustle type of mare and she turned when you sat so, it took a little while to learn how to ride all the way into the turn. Paid off in the end and I'm forever grateful she stuck it out with her.
With me, things either are or aren't going to work sooner than later. In my experiences, if we fit, we fit pretty quick, and if we don't fit, it usually stays a struggle. The ones I have had to really work at, we did get better after the first year, but the same issues were always there and it was always something I had to really focus on doing right. |

Location: Ohio girl moved to PA | it took me almost a year to get with my guy, it was hard work and we were both still learning new things and learning each other, but boy when we clicked it was the best feeling in the world. We didnt spend too much on the barrel pattern outside of races either. We trail rode A LOT, rode bareback as much as possible. I really got a feel for him and how he felt and it helped so much. We've created quite the bond and feels even bettern in the pen. |
