| Hard seat all the way.
I love this article explaining why http://dgsaddlery.com/padded-seat-vs-hard-seat/
I always had padded until my husband bought a hard seat roper. We fell in love with it - so secure and balanced. I ordered a hard seat when I bought my roper.
Went back and forth a lot when I ordered my new barrel saddle until I stumbled on the article above googling for opinions. It helped me understand why we like the hard seat so much.

Location: Somewhere around here | I've never owned a hard seat but I've ridden in my husband's custom saddle that is. I really like it and when I eventually order a custom saddle for myself I'll ask for a hard seat. |

| I ended up ordering a hard seat because it was cheaper and I love it. The article posted above totally makes sense to me. |

Location: South Georgia | Thanks guys. I guess I just associate the standard padding with comfort, but it sounds like I am wrong! |

I was the same way!
Interestingly the seat on my niece’s padded rope saddle seat got ripped by a naughty colt tied next to her horse - it’s a Dale Chavez, not a cheap saddle. It has the stitched together seat in it like the article talks about. I can totally see where it would be uncomfortable as the padding breaks down! It’s a big lump! You can feel the seam all the way back into the seat now that I know to look for it. No wonder she was complaining about not wanting to ride in it.
I can’t find the seam in our padded Martin rope saddle, but I can on my older circle y - which doesn’t surprise me. |

The padding will harden to a particular form of the human it holds. And that form can and does become uncomfortable over time. The Ranch Cowboys will NOT own or even touch a padded seat saddle!

Location: SoCal | Highly prefer the hard seat over regular. I thought it would be uncomfortable but took the leap of faith and ordered one in my most recent saddle, absolutely love it. All my saddles in the past have been padded, and I still like them, but really like the hard seat. My only padded seat I didn't like came from the same company that I got the hard seat from, both trophy saddles otherwise I wouldn't have ordered again from them, but the hard seat sits completely different than the padded regular that I got from them. No doubt I'd get another hard seat if I had the choice. |
