Location: North Dakota | What is the BEST brand/style of grazing muzzle? How long can you keep one on for?
I've never used one before so I'm trying to get educated. My horse is an easy keeper. He lives on a 40 acre pasture 24/7. Dry lotting him or keeping him in for part of the day is NOT an option, due to our board arrangement and the fact that he has KS and will get sore and tight if he can't move all the time. Of course his gut isn't helping his KS any either. So it seems to me that a grazing muzzle could help him out a lot. The only thing I'm worried about is I live almost a half hour away from where I board, so I don't get out there every day. Usually ever other or every 3 days. There is barn staff there so he won't be totally unsupervised, but they won't walk up to a half hour every day looking for him to put it on/take it off.
ETA- I don't know if it makes a difference, but his pasture is long prairie grass. I've heard of some standard muzzles with just one small opening not working with really long grass. Thoughts?

Location: west of East Texas | I keep one on my mini 24/7. As she has gotten older, the foundering pony in her has gotten stronger. It had gotten to the point that she was dry-lotted every day, never getting out in the pasture. I've had a grazing muzzle on her for about 2 years and I just had to buy the first replacement a few weeks ago. She eats plenty with it on but is slowed down enough that she gets to hang out with everyone else in the pasture. I got the cheapest one I could find first because I didn't know how it was going to work. It worked just fine so I replaced it with the same thing. I have an easy-keeper horse that is about to get one too if I don't work some weight off her now that it's warming up a little.

I always take the bottom rubber plate off, so they just have the metal cage on the bottom. They can still eat easily, but not overeat! Also works really well for horses that crib =] |
