What are something you can do to loosen and relax the rhomboids/trapezius muscles? My mare is starting to develop a dip right in front of the withers/ base of the neck and I'm thinking its because the muscles are tight and she's not using them correctly. Is this something massage can help, or what are some exercises I can do in and out of the saddle to correct the problem? I had the saddle custom fitted to her but maybe its not sitting correctly anymore and is worth looking at?

This happens to my mare when her feet are hurting her. She compensastes in this area on the opposite side of her body. Finally had X-rays and lameness exam and found navicular in fronts...worse in right. This makes sense because muscling is hard and tensed on left shoulder. Massage sessions do make it go down a bit, but only temporarily. Much better since shoeing changes were made for the navicular (wedged shoes and equipak).
