| Good morning everyone! Hope you all had a happy weekend. So...went out to feed the ponies last night, and my filly could barely walk =[ She's not putting much weight on her left front...so taking a closer look, she's fairly swollen. Not on the back tendon (not a bow) but right in front of that, on both sides. Not in one direct spot either, all the way down to her ankle. Cleaned out her feet, nothing in them. Also, note that we have about 6 inches of snow right now. I wrapped her up while she ate dinner. Came back about an hour and a half later, and she was about the same. Still in good spirits though! This morning I went out to feed breakfast, and she is a little worse than yesterday (granted, it just happened). Swollen a little on her knee now and on her pastern (around the wraps). That area is still swollen and a bit "soft" almost. Like the muscles/tendon/ligament is a little...mushy almost? She can walk around, but she's taking quite a bit of weight off that leg to move. Any ideas on what this could be?? She's not broke to ride, so there wasn't anything strenuous...unless she was playing in the snow a little hard and slipped maybe? I'm trying to give it a couple of days before I have the vet out =/ |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | Since its getting worst I'll would just get the vet out as soon as possible. Now if the swelling had gone down I would have waited also on calling a vet out, but the swelling getting worst I'll call one out now. But then your wrap could have cause more swelling too, I have seen that happen a few times. I would unwrap and rub her leg down with a good liniment rub and have the vet out.

Location: North Dakota | I wonder if it isn’t an abscess. They come on quick, make them ultra lame, and swell up like an elephant leg. |

Abscess was my first thought also. It could be brewing up under the coronet band if that’s where it’s “mushy”, they don’t always abscess out the bottom. Good luck! Hopefully it’s just an abscess that needs a couple days of being wrapped with a poultice pad and she’ll be good as new! |

| Cellulitis?
My mare tore down some fencing awhile ago and we thought nothing of it. Last week I found her leg blown up hoof to above her knee, and a couple puncture wound looking spots where the infection blew out. I am guessing she scratched herself when she tore up the fence and caused a bacterial infection under her skin. She was very lame. Something to consider!

I've never, in all the years of equine ownership, had an abscess blow out the bottom. They always emerge out of the coronary band. The bottom of the foot will look completely normal, but start poking around the coronary band and they'll let you know where they hurt. To the OP is there any heat??

| get a baseline xray, could be a broken splint or a cracked cannon bone. sometimes it can take 14 days for a fracture to show |

| Ooh...good ideas!! Would they swell from an abscess out the coronet band?? I've never had one blow there before. She's definitely swollen on her pastern. But it goes all the way up the backside of her leg to her knee. There is heat, yes. But I didn't feel any hotter around her pastern than the rest of the swollen parts. Now I'm second guessing myself...maybe I didn't check the coronet band well enough! |

Yes, they will swell even when the abscess comes out the coronary band. I've had them swell all the way up to the knee, and there was no heat involved. I've had them be completely normal one day and come out to a tree trunk leg, lame as lame can be, the next.
I would definately rule out cellulitis as another poster stated. I have a gelding who got cellulitis from a puncture wound, I didn't realize it was a puncture, just looked like a small cut, so I treated as such. A couple days later we were off to the vet for a few day stay with IV antibiotics. But if I remember correctly it was hot to the touch, which is why I asked if there was heat to it.
Hope you find out what's up with your horse. I hate mystery lameness. |

When my horses graveled it always comes out the coronet band, this is a infection that travels up and will blow out in the coronet band, one of my horse's had a hoof abscesses and it blew out in the bottom of the hoof, but my horses never swelled up to the point of looking like a elephant's leg, but when Graveled they would get some tenderness and swelling right on/above the coronet band area.. But my concern would be a fracture with all the swelling going on. Something that needs some fast attention.. I hope its just some pulled muscle that the OP's horse is going threw, so fingers cross for you OP and your filly.. |

| Thank you guys! Over the phone, my vet said that it COULD be a strained suspensory. Her swelling is fairly minor...but her limping is on the worse side. I'm going to leave work here in a few minutes...I can't take the suspense anymore. I'll see how it looks and see if maybe I can pinpoint a direct heat spot? Thank you guys for all your replies!! |

Location: Kansas | We are currently treating a head horse now for severe heal bruise/abcess. He came in 3 legged lame after being turned out after a snow storm. We thought at first it was his shoulder, had the vet come by on that Friday and palpated from his shoulder down and palpated sound in that area. No heat or swelling at all. Had xrays done and he is clean from the knee down, saw a bit of fluid in the pastern area and did dmso/furicine sweats for 3 days and still lame. Started BOT quick wraps and put a cloud boot on him and 3 weeks and still so lame. Called in my racehorse peeps and sent them videos and he is pretty sure it is in the heel area, so with that being said we are back to mixing poultice and wrapping his foot hoping something comes out. We send weekly videos to our vet and they are seeing some improvement. We are baffled as well.. |

| I feel...like such an absolute idiot...face palm now. So when I got home yesterday, I shaved her leg so that I could see everything much better and take some pics. Of course, on the back of her pastern there is a small gash. Swollen, red and infected. Her pastern is the only part on her leg swollen now, and she is hardly even off on that leg anymore. Of course my mind went straight to worst case scenario!! So now treating the cut and infection...should be cleared up within the week!! Ggrrr. Thanks for all the replies and support! I feel so lame, haha. |
