I bought what i thought was a 20 yr old POA for my daughter and had her shipped from CA to OK. Well turns out she's 23-25 years old (i feel bad for putting her through such a long haul)! I've now had her a little over a week. The first day i just gave alfalfa and grass hay. When i started giving her grain (only about 1.5 quarts) she would pick at it but most would be in her bucket the morning. I thought maybe she just didn't like whole oats. My others are on oats, alfalfa, minerals. So i got her bluebonnet senior. Ate it for a couple days now she's not eating anything except a little alfalfa. And she's eating wood! Like off of my stalls! She won't take feed out of my hand. I'm giving her an electrolyte/ probiotic paste once a day. I was told she was fed grass hay, alfalfa, and senior feed in California and was a good eater. I'm worrying myself sick over this and she has a vet appointment in the morning but wanted to get some ideas.

Edited to add that she's stalled at night but let out in the morning on a 20 acre pasture with three friendly horses. But she chooses to just stand in the barn. She is alert and doesn't act ill.

Could have developed ulcers on the long haul possibly? Definitely a good idea to have her checked out by the vet.

Teeth and stomach come to mind first. But she also may just need a longer adjustment period? Good idea to have the vet out. Hopefully you'll get some good, fixable answers.

Well at least you know now and you can treat her. The blue bonnet sr is great stuff, but I have a sr too and I fed him that for a while... I'd say about 3 months on it, then suddenly he just quit. He's never one to miss a meal.. he wouldn't even eat it out of my hand. Weird deal.. I started mixing in some omega force and renew gold and he started eating it again. So now, the crippled pasture pet ol man gets a mix of all 3 until I run out of the sr. He won't eat the sr by itself.

I have a Insulin Resistant {IR} gelding and he gets Triple Crown Lite, look into the Triple Crown feeds they are low in sugar and starch and since Blue Bonnet mills the Triple Crown I have no issue with them now adays. My gelding is doing awesome on this feed.

I bought the gastro plus and the cushings supplements so I'm waiting to receive those but for now I'm feeding her the daily gold and she's eating some of her grain :) she actually finished it overnight. So I'm hoping the gastroplus will clear up the ulcers and the daily gold to maintain. She's feeling good and is a little hot rod!

If you can get HI Pro Feed, Alfa Pro is great for horses with metabolic issues.
