Location: USA | She gets a sleazy under her sheet or blanket so the blanket doesn’t rub it off. It gets so tangled. I’m constantly spraying show sheen in it to help keep it detangled. Any other tips and tricks? It’s gotten thinner in some areas where I think the blanket rubbed it off and since then I’ve been putting the sleazy on to help prevent that. Any help appreciated!! |

| As odd as it sounds, I NEVER brush manes or tails unless they're clean and conditioned. I got told once that brushing their hair does nothing but break it off and now I'm paranoid to do it too much lol |

yep, I just pull the hair apart if they get tangled, about once a month maybe ever 2 months I will wash my horses tails and mane and then brush them out after I show sheen, but dont do any combing when hair is dry. |

Location: Duvall, WA | I have a filly with a crazy long mane. I've always been told the most important thing is to keep it clean. So I wash, condition, Cowboy Magic then Showsheen as often as I can. If you live in a decent climate--once a week. Showsheen can actually dry it and make it break so don't just use Showsheen. Clinton Anderson has a good Youtube video on tail care. I keep it braided between washes, and don't agree with the no brushing. Mine would turn into dread locks if I didn't brush it regularly.

| I usually keep my mare's mane braided since it is down to the point of her shoulder. I looked at a picture of when we got her two years ago and her mane is twice as long now as it was back then! I was shocked at the difference. I read to always keep it braided in two inch wide braids that way they won't pull on the neck and make them uncomfortable. The first few crosses of the braid should be looser then you can braid tighter. I probably unbraid, comb, and rebraid every few weeks or as needed. I would be interested in finding out how the owner's of Latigo Dun It keep his mane so long and perfect. |

Location: ND | I'm probably going to be the odd man out here, but I do NOTHING. I simply leave them alone & if I do comb them out always use detangler. The bay mare in the shooting pics mane is down to her shoulder, her forelock touches her nostrils! The bay filly in the other pic is just a yearling.

Location: Illinois | What I do in winter is brush it out, the Wet Brush for people works really well on horses and I always have less breakage on the brush. Then run some coconut oil through the mane but not on the last 1" of the hair. Then I braid it, band it, and wrap the band with electrical tape. My braids stay perfect for 2-3 weeks. It does get dirty though, the dirt will stick to the oil if they roll while it's not all soaked in yet. When its nice weather I just wash the mane & tail, reapply the oil & keep up the cycle. I don't always use shampoo, just depends on how gross it is or if I'm going anywhere. A lot of times if I need to go to a barrel race and don't want to wash the mane out I just wipe the braids down with a baby wipe to get the surface clean & leave it be. Mine will grow hair about an inch each month when I do this, my black horse will grow his tail 2" a month if I oil it & bag it, but I don't ever bag it anymore |

| I'm so the odd person out.
Pull them or roach them...
#theygetintheway #notimeforthatmess
ETA: back when I cared here was what I did:
1.) never used any silicone product
2.) never use a comb
3.) never attempt to brush or pick through with fingers unless it is sprayed with a non-silicone based product
4.) keep it clean, up in tail or mane sox, and braided
5.) fed lots of flax, i used the omega fields stuff

I have a gelding that can grown a long mane that looks just like your mare's mane but I hated how thined out it gets when it gets past the shoulder so always kept it trim at the point of his shoulder to keep that fuller look. Hes is thick and never need any extra care. |

Location: Where the buffalo roam | I keep mine braided and NEVER use rubber bands. I use electrical tape and it will stay in for weeks. I never brush it except when I'm at a show or it gets so messy it needs rebraiding and then I use the Ultra Cruz products for washing, conditioning and detangling (both spray and gel). I keep tails in a Tail Boot and never look at them until I take them down at a show. Seems to work great for me! |

This may sound crazy, but does it matter if it’s refined or unrefined coconut oil?? |

I've heard about the electrical tape.. how does it do when you go to take it off? Do you cut it off or unravel? |

Yes electrical tape is handy, but doesn't always stay put real great...because it does slide off. We use them as an added security to tape our braids on our fake tails for show. Ain't nobody got time for a fake tail to come off in the middle of the class . Let's just say the show horses aren't "what the hell is the strange thing laying in the arena" broke.

I could only imagine lol! My horses get all snorty when I set down their filled hay nets on the ground before I hang them up in their stalls.. guess it's a totally different monster when it's not hanging up. I'm at a total loss for my horses mane. Thin, scraggly and just not growing how I'd like. I may try washing it and braiding it. |

Location: Where the buffalo roam | The manes on both mine have been braided and held with tape for over a month in wet winter weather. I was always having to rebraid once a week when I did use bands because they would either slide out or dry out and fall apart. If the tails are braided but not in sacks or boots the tape will usually last 2-3 weeks.
I can see how it might not work so well to hold extensions in due to the weight.

I have never tried the tape on just hair, I just know it is one of those secrets of the trade someone showed me for the tail extensions. The tape sticks to the rubber bands really well, but if stuck to the hair, does pull off easy. We make 3 very thin braids behind the tail bone and then braid those together through the tail loop. Then secure it with the small bands. Then go around that several times with electrical tape. It's quite a deal for one class lol. Audie is nearly 17 hands and has a very full tail so his isn't as heavy as some and I don't use any added weights. He holds his tail very natural. I feel sorry for those horses that have 2 lbs weights added to the 2 lbs of hair.
I like his mane short and thin and of course his grows long and thicker every year. My pali in my profile picture has a mane like human hair. Soft and silky. It tangles easy. I clean it every now and again. Use a conditioner that soakes in and doesn't stay gooy. Braid and just re braid if I see the hairs looking messy. His mane hangs around his shoulder and well below his neck if he doesn't try and rub it out just to be a pill. |

Not sure if you were responding to me, but I don't bc its too slick for the tape and the coconut oil will make the bands break pretty quick if they're saturated. |
