Go up to Pinetop or Eager in the White Mountains. It will be much cooler up there. There are some ranches that you can ride at and some pretty good places to eat in Pinetop. There are also about 50 lakes, lots of places to fish, and hiking/mountain biking. You can hike the Mogollon Rim Trail which is really a neat thing to see, as well.
Phoenix has a decent zoo (I'm from San Diego so nothing compares to our zoo...) an aquarium, and a water park. The desert is gorgeous and there are actually lots of places to hike or do horseback tours in the morning or evening. Apache Junction (east of Phoenix about 20-30 minutes) has a gold mine/old west town. Or take historic Route 66 and go for a drive.

You WILL bake in the sun in August! (if you are in the Phoenix or Tucson areas) If you want to stay cooler, go up around Flagstaff, ShowLow, etc areas. Sedona is really pretty and a little cooler. Even Prescott & Payson areas will be cooler than down in the Valley. Alot depends on what kind of things you WANT to do.
