If you won a check at a barrel race, don't you expect to be paid at the barrel race?
**ETA - A pre-entry barrel race.

Would you pre-enter an event that published they would send all checks?
What if that event sent checks and DID NOT publish they would be sending them, would you go back to that event?
If an event is sending checks, what is an appropriate time frame for them to send checks?

Sorry for all the questions. Just found out there are some producers that SEND checks at the bigger events with NO promotion that checks would NOT be available on race day. I can't wrap my mind around this one. When did this become a "thing"?

It's their production. You are just a guest that is voluntarily there.

Could not agree more.

What about the producers that don't promote they are sending out checks? Once I've already entered. Can't get a refund. And weeks after the event still have not received my check?

Was never a big deal to me about getting checks in the mail, would not stop me from going to a barrel race if being payed in checks.. And it sometimes would take about 2 weeks to get.. And yes I would per-entry a race if being payed by checks. Like I was saying NO big deal..

It doesn't bother me if they send them out. Some producers will have the open checks on hand and send out the incentive checks. Some have them ready on the day.
When I am up early enough i don't want to hang around anyway, so if they send them out, makes it easier for me.

Now, if they do send I would hope/ think they will send out 2-3 days after the race, tops.

If I pre-enter and send money in I expect to be able to take money home with me (check if pre-entered).  If I pay in cash, I expect that producer to pay out in cash or at lease cash my check at the race.

Now if it advertised that way, I will just not attend. If it were not, I would not enter again.

I leave early usually so dont' stay for the end.  When I get a check, I am just happy.  However, a lot of times people dont' get their checks in a prompt manner because they failed to supply their SSN or fill out a W-9 for the producer.

I believe I would check to see if that might be the hold up.

And, it has been a thing since some races started getting larger and producers want to make sure their payout is right.

And a lot of times the producer will put on FB under the event what day they did mail them.

I received a check at a barrel race one time. Went to the bank to cash it, it was NSF. Producer kept telling me she would mail a good check, It never came. I had to drive 2 hours to another one of her shows with hot check in hand to get my money. I prefer to get paid with cash lol.

All the barrel races I've been to, they had cash or check in hand at the time of the show.

I wouldn't hesitate to enter one. I leave early most times anyways and well, rodeo. I've always gotten checks within a week or less. If it was becoming consistently late, I might hesitate to enter under that producer.

What is a reasonable amount of time to receive a check you won at a barrel race through the mail? I really do appreciate it. Thanks!

I've seen too many shady people on both sides of the entry office so for me it would definitely depend on who the race producer is.  I would have no issues with the good races mailing checks but I have seen bad producers that either bounce checks or ditch town with the entry money and that would be a big concern.

I still dont understand why barrel race entries are how they are.  30% entry fee hold out, office fees, arena fees, processing fees, sanction fees, late fees...heck we pay more in fees these days than what is actually going into the jackpot.  I'm ready for race producers to advertise how this really is- 0 added money, $100 entry fee with 50% pay back.  It's a lot more realistic than $1000 added, $60 entry with 30% office hold out, $20 arena fee, $20 late fees, $5-10 sanction fees.
I wish we would just use a pay cash system like most ropings- enter day of the race with green bills and get paid day of the race with green bills; 2/3 hold out to cover office, arena and livestock.  No bounced checks, no waiting on mail or find out it was "lost" in the mail, no hounding producers for money, no vet outs or waiting weeks for money to be sent back.  Simplify everyones life and get back to enjoying races.

If it was advertised it wouldn’t bother me a bit. I go to a few large multi day races where this is the policy - there is just soooo much going on at the end with people trying to leave and awards etc that I think it is easier on the producers to be able to audit results and make sure w2’s are on file etc. we’re talking 1200+ runs.

If I pre entered and it wasn’t advertised that checks would be sent I’d be a little bent the first time, suggest they advertise that next time, and hope my money showed up timely. If it didn’t show up timely I’d have to seriously reconsider entering again.

When we run at multi day rodeo’s and don’t run on the last night (or don’t want to wait around until after slack at 3am) we just wait for the mail, no biggie.

YUP! When I see producers advertising 1000, 2000, added money with a 85.00 entry fee I always call and ask " Who donated the added money". Never get a call back. You , the entrant , are adding your own added money. lol

True,  but there is absolutely zero reasons to not be able to distribute winnings to those who remain till the end of the race whether entries were collected as pre entries or cash the day of.  Be organized enough and have enough help to get the job done if you want to be a successful producer.    If it is advertised that winnings will be mailed I think 7-10 days is reasonable.  I have been to many large productions, up to 700 plus entries,  and winnings have always been available to those who were present to collect.   I think most producers prefer to hand them to you then have to take the time to mail them.

Edited to add that in my area if it was not advertised that winnings would not be available the day of the race and they were told the day of, I guarantee that producer would never have another successful race here.

When I enter a barrel race (particularly an expensive one) I take a good look at the TRUE percentage of payback. If the number dips too low I am out. As far as waiting for a check in the mail, it would totally depend on the producer and their reputation. I have seen more then enough shady producers spending the entry fees and fail to deliver the payout!!

Small jackpots, yes I expect to take home my money that day (usually cash). Larger races, I don't mind a check being mailed to me as long as it's done in a timely manner. Checks being mailed is especially helpful if the barrel race is going to last ALL day because I'm the kind of person who likes to show up for my run and then go home, lol. So if I don't have to stick around till the very end (which can be hours after my run), then I'm all for it.

Believe me, not only is it a thankless endeavor but there are fees that no one even thinks about. The advertising, electronic eye, software, staff, etc. That is on top of the arena fee, tractor fee, stall fees. Some producers even pay themselves, which should be fine because they are the one's putting the time and effort in it.

From having produced several barrel races and ranch rodeos, for us the 30% held back(we did 20%) went to the unseen expenses from contestants, went back into the pot for the next race, and insurance. We always paid out the day of but there were days that I wished I had told them I would send a check in the mail. It's so exhausting! I don't agree that they don't advertise it however or at least have it posted at the sign in table, people deserve a heads up.

Speaking from a (very small) producer standpoint - we tried to do an all cash payout ONCE for our weeknight series. It was an absolute nightmare. We needed 3x the amount of small bills ($1s & $5s) that we had. We had started the night with plenty, and then had a bunch of people pay their entries with very large bills. When the bank closes at 5 and you don't close entries until 7...the office is kind of SOL in that situation.

It's way easier on the office and faster to write checks in my opinion. And I like having the paper trail that a check provides showing that yes, indeed, Betty Barrel Racer was paid $xx.

There is a larger association that had a large race recently that apparently is taking its sweet time sending out checks to winners.   Last years event same story- took the "big winners"  up to 2 months to get their checks, and Im hearing rumblings about the same thing this year.

I’ve never been to one that did this so I’m not sure how I would feel. A lot of jackpots around here only accept cash and then payout in cash after the race. I usually always stay until the end but this past summer I was sick so I ran and left. I won a check. It took 4 MONTHS for me to get said check. It never got mailed. I picked it up the next time I was there. I would call and remind her to mail it and she would say she had forgot and would mail it that day but it never came. So I’m not sure how I would feel about a race that states beforehand that they will mail checks.
